Job Overview

We're Blue River Technology, a pioneering team of innovators dedicated to creating intelligent machinery that solves monumental problems for our customers. We empower farmers, construction crews, and foresters to implement safer and more sustainable solutions, driving increased profitability with less reliance on scarce labor.

Our mission-driven and daring team is eager to define the new frontier of mobile robotics. We collaborate across disciplines, rapidly iterate, and get our boots in the field to figure it out. Our goal is to make a tangible and positive impact on the planet.

About the Role

This position is eligible for remote work. As a Principal Autonomous Systems Safety Engineer, you will be a leader responsible for delivering trust in our autonomous solutions. You'll evaluate scenarios that our vehicles encounter, lead safety reviews, and establish safety requirements.

In this role, you will distill the safety framework into actionable tasks to deploy and scale autonomy. You'll work with our engineering teams to ensure the reliability and robustness of our systems.

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities are:

  • Evaluate technical safety requirements through tools like STPA or FMEA.
  • Define system reliability and robustness requirements for new hardware.
  • Conduct risk assessments to inform safety reviews and support feature concept development.
  • Work with data infrastructure teams to identify data and tools needed for real-world fleet performance monitoring.
  • Maintain interfaces with vehicle-engineering teams.
Requirements

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, including risk assessment and product/safety management.
  • 3+ years of experience developing safety-critical electronic and embedded systems.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments for autonomous ground vehicles and conducting safety reviews (HARA, STPA, FMEA, etc).
  • Ability to quickly identify key issues and bound likelihood and severity, making safety-critical decisions under uncertainty.
  • Effective communication skills, including written and verbal communication.
Preferred Qualifications

A strong candidate will also have:

  • Hands-on experience in embedded system development, software development, and/or verification/validation of such systems.
  • Understanding of ECU HW designs and automotive interconnects like CAN or Automotive Ethernet.
  • Safety analysis for L3-L5 autonomous vehicles.
  • Experience with embedded Linux, ROS2, and/or AWS.
