Surgical Imaging Specialist

Work Schedule:
Part-time, Evening and Night shifts, including every other weekend, totaling 28 hours per week. This position offers a $6,000 Sign-On Bonus. Reporting to the Director of Radiology/Imaging, with accountability to the manager and under the guidance of surgeons and radiologists, the role involves performing surgical diagnostic procedures in the operating room as required, along with other diagnostic imaging tasks; additionally, this position includes training and supervising students within the Surgical Department.
Key Responsibilities:Conduct surgical diagnostic imaging examinations as necessary, including but not limited to Cholangiograms, hip pinnings, femoral roddings, retrogrades, pacemaker implants, cystoscopy, bronchoscopy, and femoral bypass.
Execute diagnostic imaging procedures as assigned, ensuring clear communication of procedures and instructions to patients. Prepare patients adequately for various procedures prior to surgery, positioning them for exams and applying necessary immobilization devices. Monitor patients' conditions throughout the procedures and report any changes to the surgeon.
Assist patients in transitioning from wheelchairs and stretchers to surgical and diagnostic imaging tables.
Exhibit the knowledge and skills required to assess, treat, and care for patients across all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics, tailoring care based on developmental stages.
Involve family members or guardians in the care plan and provide education to patients and families as appropriate, considering the developmental needs of the patient.
Ensure aseptic conditions are upheld in the surgical environment during examinations and routinely clean all radiographic equipment in the room.
Process imaging results and verify quality standards.
Report any malfunctions of diagnostic equipment in the surgical area to the appropriate supervisor.
Assist in maintaining adequate supply levels in work areas.
Supervise the activities of students assigned to the surgical area and assist in their training.
Participate in the on-call rotation schedule within the surgical department.
Schedule examinations and uphold service quality in the surgical area in the absence of the Primary Lead Surgical Technologist.
Take responsibility for personal professional development by attending continuing education classes, seminars, and reviewing professional literature.
Adhere to all standards, policies, and procedures set forth by the organization.
- Graduation from an accredited Radiologic Technology program is required.
- Current ARRT registration with certification in Radiography and accreditation from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Department of Nuclear Safety is required.
- One year of experience as a general radiographer with operating room experience or a graduate of the organization’s Radiologic Technologist program with three months of surgical/OR experience is required.
- Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Knowledge of and/or experience in the proper use of body mechanics.
- Demonstrated ability to perform various radiographic examinations required in the surgical setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients who may be anxious or confused, as well as with surgeons and other hospital staff.
- Analytical skills to determine proper patient positioning and assess the quality of performed exams.
- Effective communication skills to inform patients about examination procedures and discuss requirements with surgeons.
- Flexibility in work schedule is essential.
- Proficiency in using a computer to perform job-related functions as defined by the Radiology Department.
Physical Requirements:
- Moderate physical effort is required, including continuous standing or walking.
- Frequent lifting or moving of average weight materials (positioning and moving equipment) and occasional lifting or moving of heavier materials (transferring patients) in challenging positions.
- Work involves concentrated mental and visual attention, along with manual coordination.
Working Conditions:
- Conditions are generally acceptable, though there may be at least one disagreeable element or hazard, such as the risk of radiation exposure, and occasional exposure to infectious diseases.
