Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist to join our team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. As a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, you will be responsible for performing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform MRI and MRA exams with and without contrast materials.
  • Confer with radiologists to determine requirements for non-standard exams.
  • Determine technical factors, positioning, number, and thickness of scans to produce and satisfy requirements of MRI scanning.
  • Work with radiologists as a member of the radiographic team.
  • Assist and anticipate the needs of radiologists and the performance of exams.
  • Practice patient safety related to contrast materials used in MRI.
  • Assist clerks by contacting outpatients by phone to confirm MRI appointments.
  • Screen patients by phone and before each exam for MRI contraindications.
  • Maintain records and files of exams performed on patients.
  • Properly identify patients by full name, full SSN, and full DOB.
  • Assure that MRI patients are screened in advance for any contraindicating conditions per Radiology Service policy.
  • Responsible for stocking and inventory of all MRI supplies and related material.
  • Continually review new developments in MRI technology.
  • Prepare and administer contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist.
  • Explain exams to competent patients so that the patient understands what is to be performed as well as any potential hazards.
  • Perform irregular hour emergency scans on standby, 24 hours per day, coverage.
  • Responsible for daily QA activities required for the safe operations of the MRI equipment and use of supplies.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R).
  • Must have advanced ARRT certification for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently.
  • Must have completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
Working Conditions

The work environment is a healthcare setting with exposure to radiation and MRI equipment. The incumbent must be able to work independently and as part of a team, with frequent standing, walking, and lifting of patients and equipment.

The selected candidate will be required to serve a probationary period and pass a pre-employment physical examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
