Job Summary

The Sanitation District Mechanic III is a critical role in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and systems involved in wastewater treatment and conveyance. As a journey-level class in the SD Mechanic series, incumbents independently perform a variety of skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work with minimal instruction or guidance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain wastewater, storm water, and recycled water pumping stations, potable water wells and treatment facilities, chemical handling systems, oxygen injection systems, hydraulic power systems, and hydro-pneumatic systems.
  • Perform skilled, hard physical labor, including lifting heavy equipment and tools, and working in confined spaces.
  • Read and interpret maps, diagrams, instruction manuals, plans, and blueprints, and maintain accurate and detailed records.
  • Work standby and respond to emergency calls, and work in areas with unsteady footing.
  • Use computer equipment and related peripheral equipment to enter and extract information.
Requirements
  • Possession of a valid California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Mechanical Technologist Grade 1 certificate, or higher.
  • Three years of full-time paid experience employed by the County of Sacramento in the class of Sanitation District Mechanic Level I/II, or four years of full-time paid experience in the maintenance, construction, and repair of mechanical and electrical components of equipment in wastewater treatment plants, potable water systems, lift stations, storm drain pumping stations, or other mechanical facilities with similar systems and equipment.
  • A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, and a valid California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Mechanical Technologist Grade 2 certificate within one year of appointment.
Working Conditions

The Sanitation District Mechanic III works in a fast-paced environment with varying temperatures, dust, dirt, noise, and odors. The incumbent must be able to work in confined spaces, wear respiratory protection, and demonstrate color vision sufficient to distinguish the colors on a computer screen that indicate equipment status and conditions.

Physical Requirements

The Sanitation District Mechanic III must be able to perform strenuous manual labor, including lifting heavy equipment and tools, and working in confined spaces. The incumbent must also be able to stand on a ladder while performing tasks with both hands, and work in areas with unsteady footing.
