Job Summary:

The Johns Hopkins University Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a highly skilled Electronics Technician/Assistant Design Studio Manager to provide technical expertise and guidance to engineering students developing solutions involving electronic systems and sensors. This role requires collaboration with faculty and staff to develop educational resources, workshops, and training programs.

About the Role:

This position will oversee the management of part-time student workers, assist in the overall operations of the Design Studio (DS), and ensure smooth operation for courses. Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with faculty and staff to develop educational resources and workshops
  • Providing technical training and support to students on DS equipment and resources
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting DS equipment
  • Managing resource utilization, planning future equipment needs, and developing budgets
  • Collaborating with financial staff on expenditure tracking and reviews
  • Ensuring compliance with safety guidelines and laboratory protocols

Key Requirements:

  • Capabilities and competencies in electronic systems and sensors, circuit and PCB, electrical testing, and microprocessors
  • Working knowledge of electrical testing devices such as voltmeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.
  • Experience with hands-on electronics prototyping, including soldering, PCB design and assembly, and circuit testing
  • Strong understanding of sensor integration and interfacing with microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi)
  • Familiarity with electronic design automation (EDA) tools such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or KiCad
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and programming languages such as C/C++, Python, or MATLAB
  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems and software such as BioPac, NI, Labview, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug electronic circuits and systems
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively mentor and support students
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to electronics and prototyping
  • Knowledge of wet/biological laboratory setup and protocols
  • Machine shop operations (mills, lathes, CNC machinery, etc.)
  • Rapid prototyping (3D printing, FDM, Material jetting)
  • Engineering design and processes
  • Electronics, circuitry, microprocessors, mechatronics/robotics
  • Biological/wet laboratory management

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field
  • Three years related experience
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a makerspace, lab, or educational environment
