Job Overview

VIA Visually Impaired Advancement is seeking a highly skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our team.

The successful candidate will provide expert guidance and instruction to individuals of all ages who are blind or have low vision, empowering them to navigate their surroundings with confidence and independence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide personalized Orientation and Mobility instruction to clients, tailoring lessons to meet their unique needs and goals.
  • Assess client needs, develop effective lesson plans, and track progress to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Document client information, progress, and outcomes in accordance with VIA and NYSCB guidelines.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology in the field, applying this knowledge to enhance client services.
  • Collaborate with clients, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless communication and successful outcomes.
  • Develop and implement curriculum for summer youth programs, promoting accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and trainings to stay current on best practices and industry developments.
  • Lead and participate in the development of special programs and projects, driving innovation and excellence in client services.
Requirements
  • Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility or equivalent certificate program completion.
  • ACVREP certification or eligibility to sit for the certification exam.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment of 15 pounds or more, and to perform repetitive motion of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
