About the Role
We are seeking a skilled Overnight Veterinary Technician to join our emergency care team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in veterinary emergency medicine, critical care nursing, patient triage, surgical support, and life-saving interventions.
Responsibilities
- Provide immediate, high-quality care in emergency situations, assisting with triage, patient stabilization, and rapid assessment of critically ill or injured animals.
- Perform critical interventions, including pain management, fluid therapy, intubation, CPR, and medication administration, following established protocols to stabilize patients in emergency and critical care situations.
- Continuously monitor and assess vital signs and changes in patient condition, utilizing emergency care protocols to ensure timely and accurate interventions.
- Assist veterinarians in advanced emergency procedures, such as fracture stabilization, laceration repairs, and wound care.
- Perform a wide range of diagnostic tests, including radiographs (X-rays), bloodwork, urinalysis, fecals, and cytology, ensuring fast, accurate results for timely diagnosis and treatment decisions.
- Expertly place IV catheters for fluid therapy, blood draws, and emergency interventions.
- Assist with sedated and anesthetized procedures, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and effective monitoring throughout the process.
- Provide comprehensive care for hospitalized patients, including ongoing pain management, hydration therapy, and regular vital sign monitoring to ensure a smooth recovery and minimize stress.
- Administer medications as prescribed via various routes, following precise protocols to ensure safe and effective delivery of emergency and chronic treatments.
- Serve as a key point of contact for pet owners, offering compassionate support and clear communication regarding their pet's condition, treatment plans, and prognosis.
- Manage the flow of patients within the emergency department, including discharge coordination, providing detailed aftercare instructions to owners, and ensuring timely updates to medical records in the EMR system.
- Work closely with a skilled team of emergency veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff, sharing expertise and knowledge to ensure a collaborative approach to patient care in a fast-paced emergency setting.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2-3 years of veterinary technician experience in a clinical setting, ideally with exposure to general practice or emergency/critical care environments.
- Certification as a Veterinary Technician (LVT, RVT, or CVT) is preferred but not required.
- In-depth knowledge of veterinary procedures, including anesthesia administration, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, surgical assistance, and patient monitoring.
- Experience with critical care and emergency situations is highly valued.
- Strong competency in general medical mathematics, including calculating medication dosages, fluid therapy, and anesthesia protocols.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex medical terminology and treatment plans in a way that is approachable and understandable to clients.
- A team-player mentality is essential in this role, with a focus on open communication, respect, and mutual support among staff.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced, dynamic environment are critical.
- A compassionate and empathetic nature, with a genuine passion for animal welfare and the ability to remain calm, compassionate, and reassuring during difficult or emotionally charged situations.
Benefits
- Competitive salary based on experience, reflecting your skills, expertise, and dedication to animal care, estimated at $45,000 - $65,000 per year, depending on qualifications.
- Comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, dental, and vision coverage.
- Paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays, promoting a healthy work-life balance.
- Access to continuing education opportunities to further develop your skills and knowledge in veterinary medicine.
- A collaborative, supportive work environment where teamwork is a cornerstone of our practice.
