The City and County of Butte-Silver Bow, MT is seeking a highly skilled Detention Officer to join our team in the Detention Center. This role involves overseeing the daily operations of the facility, ensuring the safety and well-being of inmates, and maintaining order and discipline within the premises.
Salary: The estimated salary for this position is between $47,310 and $53,662 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
About the Role:
We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills, able to work effectively with law enforcement personnel, inmates, and the general public. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of detention principles, practices, equipment, and terminology, as well as knowledge of local, state, and federal codes governing the detention and housing of inmates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and control the custody and activities of inmates, enforcing facility rules and regulations, maintaining order and discipline, and monitoring and controlling activities within assigned areas of the facility;
- Perform intake of prisoners, ensuring implementation of regulations concerning fingerprinting, mug photography, hygiene, and allocated clothing;
- Communicate and coordinate with multiple agencies, including the County Attorney's Office;
- Monitor and regulate recreational, educational, hygienic, nourishment, and social activities to maintain control of individual prisoners and the general inmate population;
- Supervise inmate visitations, intervening in and/or reporting abnormalities;
- Generate statistical and narrative reports;
- Perform cell checks;
- Issue basic supplies to prisoners;
- Answer phones and respond to questions regarding Detention Facility population;
- Administer medication to inmates;
- Deliver meals to inmates;
- Clean Detention Facility cells;
- Perform related work as required.
Requirements:
- High school graduation or equivalent;
- Some experience in the control of individuals in a secured or organized environment;
- Good knowledge of detention principles, practices, equipment, and terminology;
- Ability to communicate well with law enforcement personnel, inmates, and the general public;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, supervisory personnel, inmates, and facility visitors;
- Ability to prepare accurate and reliable reports containing findings, recommendations, inmate population inventories, and disciplinary actions;
- Ability to operate a personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications appropriate to assigned duties;
- Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
- Ability to perform a wide variety of detention and prisoner control tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines and in an atmosphere of personal danger;
- Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
