Job Summary

The Patient Care Technician, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practicing Nurse (LPN), performs patient care tasks and procedures necessary to provide for the care, comfort, and safety of patients.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age(s) of the patients served on the assigned unit.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  1. Patient & Visitor Interactions /Customer Service/Hourly Rounding: Interact with patients and visitors, answer patient call lights, answer phones, and assist visitors within the facility.
  2. Patient Safe Handling/Ambulation/Repositioning: Learn patient safe handling skills to assist in the ambulation of patients and assist nursing staff in transferring, lifting, and/or repositioning patients using Safe Patient Handling equipment.
  3. Basic Nursing Care- ADLs: Provide basic care by assisting patients with personal care needs, including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, feeding, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, and bed making, under the supervision of a RN/LPN.
  4. Admission/Discharge/Transfers: Assist with room setup, welcoming new patients/room orientation, discharging, and/or transferring patients. Provide patient/family orientation to room and hospital according to hospital practice. Transport/escort patients to area of destination ensuring safety and regularly update patients.
  5. Procedures and Treatments: Accurately complete and document patient care activities, including ADL, vital signs, weights, intake & output, and calorie counts according to policy and procedure. Effectively explain and perform procedures, such as urinary catheter removal, ECGs, wound care, and dressing changes under the direction of the nurse.
  6. Care Companion/Sitter/Observer: Remain with patients as a means to keep them safe, as directed by the RN or LPN.
  7. Department Specific Tasks: Support the nursing team by indirect patient care activities, such as restocking equipment/linens, cleaning equipment, answering and relaying telephone calls, filing and maintaining records, retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments, test results, and so forth.
Minimum Requirements

Eligible to work in the US. Completion of an accredited certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course preferred. Completion of at least one nursing clinical rotation in medical or surgical nursing preferred.

Current BLS certification for the Healthcare Provider issued by either American Heart Association, if not current or does not have certification, required to be obtained within the employee's introductory period (within 90 days of hire date).

Environment: Flow of work and character of duties involves normal mental, visual, auditory attention much or all of the time with manual dexterity is required for sustained periods of time. Requires visual acuity adequate to assess patients and read/record patient charts. Requires auditory acuity adequate to converse with patients, members of the healthcare team, and coworkers who are wearing masks.

Potential for exposure to blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials, chemicals, and other hazardous conditions which may pose a health risk.

Able to work under pressure to meet patient care needs.

Physical Demands: When in the clinical environment, must utilize appropriate patient movement equipment for patient-lifting and transfers when the transfer is a non-emergency situation. In an urgent event, may need to assist with lifting up to 50 pounds.

When applicable, wear an N95 mask/PAPR and other PPE.

Sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting throughout the shift.

Technical Skills: Basic computer skills required.
