Reports To: Fire Chief

Job Overview: The Devens Fire Department at MassDevelopment is seeking highly skilled and dedicated individuals for the position of Firefighter/EMT. Preference will be given to applicants with paramedic qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to fire and emergency alarms in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Operate various types of firefighting equipment and apparatus, including pumpers, tankers, hose wagons, rescue trucks, and forest fire trucks.
  • Perform critical functions involving hoses, ladders, hydrants, rescues, nozzles, and salvage operations.
  • Conduct daily inspections and routine maintenance of fire apparatus to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Serve as a driver-operator, positioning vehicles for effective use in emergency situations.
  • Operate component equipment, such as radios, pumps, valves, and ladders, while adhering to strict safety protocols.
  • Engage in emergency rescues, including drowning and extrication operations.
  • Inspect facilities for fire hazards and prepare comprehensive reports on unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain department property and facilities, ensuring a clean and organized work environment.
  • Perform alarm room duties and act as a standby crew member during hazardous operations.

Competencies:

  • Hold a valid Massachusetts EMT-B certification.
  • Reside within 15 miles of Devens or have the ability to relocate within the residency requirements within one year of employment.
  • Meet and maintain the qualifications and skills defined in NFPA 1001: Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, most recent Edition - Chapter 5 Fire Fighter II.
  • Candidates with paramedic qualifications are preferred.
  • Possess hazardous material training (first responder operational level) as per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120.
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • An associate or bachelor's degree in fire science is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrate administrative and computer skills, including experience in Microsoft Office.
  • Exhibit physical and mental capacity to handle stressful and dangerous situations.
  • Able to follow oral and written instructions, maintain professional relationships, and interact with individuals under stress.
  • Familiarity with the town's streets and physical layout is beneficial.
  • Able to make quick decisions in emergencies and effectively interact with individuals under stress.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish harmonious working relationships are essential.
  • Bilingualism is helpful but not required for the job.

Salary: $31.41-$32.81 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
