San Francisco, California, United States Charm Industrial Full time

About Charm Industrial

We're a pioneering company on a mission to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO2. Our innovative solution involves converting excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil, which we then inject into underground storage for permanent carbon removal.

Our groundbreaking approach took off in 2020 with initial purchases from prominent customers like Stripe, Shopify, and Microsoft. Since then, we've scaled up our operations significantly, achieving thousands of tons of carbon removal, expanding our team to over a hundred employees, and establishing three locations in strategic areas.

We're now looking to expand our team of ambitious, creative, and forward-thinking individuals who share our passion for reversing climate change. We value psychological safety, collaboration, and calculated risk-taking. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where everyone's unique backgrounds and perspectives contribute to their work.

Come be part of our journey towards a more sustainable future. Together, let's make a meaningful impact on reducing gigatons of carbon emissions.

About the Role

This senior role is critical in designing and implementing automation systems that support thousands of pyrolyzers as we scale up our operations. You'll be responsible for building automation solutions that enable our novel electromechanical equipment to put more carbon underground efficiently. If you enjoy understanding new processes, designing automation from scratch, and working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, this position is ideal for you.

In this role, you'll not only write fully functional code but also co-create automation solutions to achieve our climate goals. These solutions might include better HMIs, new SCADA systems, and data visualizations that monitor and control our plant from one central location.

This position will involve hands-on work with hardware but also require software development using common industrial automation languages under our GitHub codebase. You'll learn about our operations and R&D equipment to develop, implement, test, and support novel control systems. Your input will help determine how our operators interact with the equipment through HMI design, gathering feedback, and turning it into design changes. You'll identify manual processes that can be improved through automation and work to implement those solutions to enable our mission.

This role reports to our Automation Engineering Manager under the engineering team. As a key member of our team, you'll play a crucial role in hitting our goal of removing gigatons of carbon emissions and preventing catastrophic climate effects.

Your Responsibilities:

  • You'll play a critical role in supporting our ability to manage fleets of pyrolyzers
  • You'll work closely with our development team to make software updates in support of new sensors and automation
  • You'll conceptualize, implement, and validate automation software solutions that reduce operator burden and accelerate our scaling efforts
  • You'll own the design of intuitive Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) tailored for frontline operators
  • You'll work to integrate SCADA across our entire plant, including monitoring and control of many machines, and creating dashboards to visualize key data for stakeholders
  • You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to pinpoint critical processes that inform optimal user interfaces
  • Your work will shape the foundation of our controls & data acquisition infrastructure

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of experience programming PLCs and HMIs in a similar industry
  • A strong understanding of protocols such as Modbus, E/IP, RS485, and OPC-UA
  • A history of designing & building HMI user interfaces
  • Practical experience using SCADA systems to bring-up industrial machines
  • Experience designing and deploying PLC software adhering to IEC61131-3 Standard
  • Programming skills in Structured Text (ST), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Ladder Logic (LD), and Python
  • Strong leadership skills for taking on fast-paced projects, changing requirements, and priorities
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating safety elements in PLC design

Bonus Requirements:

  • Experience programming in Codesys
  • Experience with electrical design & schematics
  • Familiarity with Linux environment & SaaS tools
  • Prior experience with Ignition SCADA, especially within the Vision Module

Compensation: $134,000 - $160,000 per year

The anticipated salary range is dependent on factors such as experience within the job, within the industry, education, location, etc.

What We Offer:

  • Stock options
  • Health benefits (medical, dental, vision)
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k) with a 50% match on contributions up to 6%
  • Paid time off, including parental leave
  • A yearly professional development stipend
  • Healthy snacks and lunches for onsite employees
  • A chance to pivot into a role in climate

Visa Sponsorship Policy:

Charm Industrial is currently only sponsoring E3 and TN visas at this time.
