Economic Development Attorney

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership seeks a seasoned Attorney to join its Office of the General Counsel. As a key member of the team, you will provide expert guidance on legal issues and policy interpretation, enabling the organization to effectively support economic development in the state.

Responsibilities:

  • Agreement negotiation and drafting: You will work closely with stakeholders to draft, negotiate, and enforce agreements related to economic development incentive grant programs.
  • Freedom of Information Act compliance: Assist with the application of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act in conducting public meetings and respond to records requests.
  • Economic development advisory services: Advise staff on the development and use of economic development incentives.
  • Legislation and policy review: Assist with the review and development of economic development-related legislation and policy.
  • Additional legal support: Conduct other legal work to support the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

Requirements:

  • Comprehensive knowledge: You must have a comprehensive knowledge of relevant federal and Virginia laws and constitutions, as well as the operation of Virginia government.
  • Economic development expertise: Knowledge of the economic development process and relevant laws related to economic development is preferred.
  • Project management: Ability to plan, develop, and implement projects.
  • Negotiation and problem-solving: Ability to negotiate and resolve problems.
  • Communication skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Presentation and interpersonal skills: Strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational and time management skills: Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Independence and deadline management: Demonstrated history of working with minimal supervision and managing multiple deadlines.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: At least five years of experience as a licensed attorney.
  • Education and membership: Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school and membership in the Virginia State Bar (or eligibility for membership).
