Job Summary

The Brooklyn Museum is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Curator of Contemporary Art to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to work with a world-renowned cultural institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing art, history, and heritage.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of developing groundbreaking exhibitions and publications that celebrate artists of great import, and a passion for contemporary art, including artists from diverse communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement curatorial strategies for the Museum's collection of contemporary art
  • Work closely with the Director, Trustees, Development department, and curatorial colleagues on acquisitions
  • Collaborate with Engagement, Public Programs, and Development staff to promote new acquisitions and collection-related activities
  • Propose, organize, and coordinate innovative exhibitions of contemporary art
  • Participate in the reinterpretation of the collection and the management of collections owned by and on loan to the Museum
  • Advocate for and assist in the development of public and educational programming

Requirements:

  • Seven to ten years of relevant work experience as a curator for established arts organizations
  • Demonstrable success conceptualizing, designing, and implementing curatorial strategies
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and critical histories and theories of race, class, ability, and gender in the production, reception, and institutionalization of art
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to make connections across collections and build effective cross-departmental relationships
  • Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to diverse communities
  • High-level cultivation and grant development experience at arts organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment to DEIA in the field

Education:

MA or PhD in a relevant field

Work Schedule:

35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm
