Job Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Specimen Processor to join our dynamic team at UPMC Harrisburg. As a key member of our laboratory operations, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth receipt, sorting, identification, processing, and distribution of patient specimens to various technical sections.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Receiving and Sorting Specimens: Ensure timely processing of incoming specimens from OR, outpatient, and doctor's offices, prioritizing tasks according to laboratory policies.
  • Samples Processing: Identify, process, and distribute specimens to all technical sections, adhering to strict quality control measures.
  • Computer System Management: Enter requisition information, patient results, and related data into our hospital database, maintaining accurate records and ensuring seamless communication between teams.
  • Clerical Duties: Perform routine administrative tasks, including answering phone inquiries, coding charge slips, training new employees, and completing quality forms for unacceptable specimens or requesting errors.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: A strong educational foundation is essential for this role, as it demonstrates a solid grasp of basic mathematical concepts, language skills, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience in Clinical Laboratories or Related Fields: Three to six months of experience in a clinical laboratory setting or similar environment is preferred, highlighting knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory information systems, and customer service principles.
  • Service Orientation and Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are crucial for interacting with diverse age groups, patients, families, and colleagues, both verbally and in writing.

 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34 Clearance: In accordance with Pennsylvania state regulations, a clear Act 34 clearance is mandatory for all applicants, ensuring adherence to child protection laws and safeguarding vulnerable populations.
