Position Overview:

Reporting to the Director of Counseling Services, the Mental Health Counselor’s primary responsibility is to plan and provide direct mental health counseling through individual, couples, and group modalities to students enrolled at Manchester University. This position is also responsible for crisis intervention and facilitating training or workshops pertaining to various issues relating to mental health and wellness. This position will primarily serve the North Manchester campus but may have responsibilities on the Fort Wayne campus as necessary.

Essential job functions:
  • Assess student mental health needs for Manchester University’s student population, adjusting and providing services accordingly.
  • Assist in identifying and counseling students at risk for poor outcomes related to mental health.
  • Provide individual, couples, and group counseling. Groups are designed based on student need/interest.
  • Coordinate with faculty and staff regarding counseling referrals.
  • Facilitate referrals as needed for appropriate off-campus mental health needs: medical assessments, psychiatric or psychological consults, in-patient hospitalization, and/or off-campus counseling.
  • Maintain confidential student files.
  • Provide crisis intervention services, as needed, with rotating on-call assignments.
  • Participate in weekly intervention team meetings.
SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Marketing of counseling services which includes assuring maintenance and updating of the counseling services website in collaboration with the Director of Counseling
  • Coordinate with student groups and/or faculty/staff for prevention efforts in related/overlapping areas, i.e. sexual assault, violence prevention
  • Assist with counseling services program review/feedback
  • Serve on university committees as assigned
  • Demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful university community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Participate in staff development and in-service training programs as appropriate
Qualifications:
  • A commitment to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion amoung students, faculty, and staff.
  • Minimum master’s degree in counseling, social work, or related field.
  • Licensed in the state of Indiana or ability to obtain licensure within 2 years.
  • Experience or comparable skills working with the college student population.
  • Superior counseling skills, including individual, couples, and group therapy. Includes ability to accurately assess student needs, identify mental health diagnosis, and appropriately refer.
  • Ability to provide leadership, while working cooperatively with other offices on campus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Self-motivator with both strong clinical and program development skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including active listening and problem solving; preferred knowledge of motivational interviewing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to details.
  • Experience with public speaking and customer service.
  • Ability to multitask and coordinate multiple program activities while completing assigned tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Computer literate; proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Work schedule: This is a part-time, non-exempt position with a work schedule that will require some evening hours and may include occasional weekend hours. Work hours are up to 20 hours per week. In addition, this is a 10-month position, August 1 – May 31; summer hours may be required.
