Purpose Statement
The job of Speech Language Pathologist is done for the purpose/s of assessing students' communication development level and providing appropriate treatment to meet individual student objectives as well as providing recommendations for program development. Essential Functions
  • Assesses students' speech language development skills (e.g. receptive/expressive language skills, speech production skills, social language skills development, etc.) and interprets results for the purpose of determining their need for special education services.
  • Develops speech-language therapy programs and provides direct therapy to students in accordance with their individualized plans.
  • Provides consultation to classroom teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • Reviews and maintains speech-language files and related paperwork to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. evaluation reports, individualized treatment plans, student data, billing records, and progress reports) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information to others.
  • Presents information about students and/or programs to a variety of audiences including families, colleagues, and outside agencies.
  • Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' goals.

Skills, Knowledge and Ability
SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practice and preparing and maintain accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic mathematical calculations and basic statistics as it relates to normative data; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: health standards and hazards and safety practices.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job -related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; and working as part of a team. Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and /or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to affect the Organization's services. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
