Position Summary:
The Orthopedic Technologist is a trained member of the orthopedic team who works with all healthcare professionals in delivering high quality patient care. The Orthopedic Technologist is familiar with routine office and departmental procedures and is able to perform basic nursing functions The Orthopedic Technologist is an expert in plaster and synthetic cast/splint application and removal. They demonstrate knowledge of specific orthopedic procedures and display dexterity in the use of instrumentation and equipment. The Orthopedic Technologist is able to fit and adjust crutches/canes/walkers as well as instruct the patients on the use of these aids. The Orthopedic Technologist also possesses expert ability in application of braces, orthotics and can perform minor adjustments or repairs on them.
Major Position Responsibilities:
The position characteristics reflect the most important duties, responsibilities and competencies considered necessary to perform the essential functions of the job in a fully competent manner. They should not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements of the position. The characteristics of the position and standards of performance may be changed by TCMC with or without prior notice based on the needs of the organization.
- Maintains a safe, clean working environment, including unit based safety and infection control requirements.
- Assists physicians to carry out their orders, including but not limited to, performing bandage/dressing changes, removal of sutures or staples and apply or remove casts or splints.
- Apply all DME as ordered by physician.
- Adequately educate patients on the care and use of all casts/splints/DME as well as proper ambulation using assistive devices such as crutches/canes/walkers.
- Maintain a clean and well stocked cast room.
- Manage patient flow in a timely fashion in accordance to the schedule.
- Answer all phone calls and check voicemail throughout the day.
- Bill for all casts/splints/DME as outlined by the DME Billing Policy and Procedure.
- Check in all orders received as per the guidelines in the DME and Supply Ordering Policy and Procedure.
- Informs physician of any patient complications requiring additional support.
- Attends staff meetings and participates in a positive manner.
- Participates in appropriate in-services and continued education.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- One (1) year experience in either a hospital, clinical or office setting; working directly in the treatment of orthopedic patients, preferred.
- Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based upon a basic understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another.
- Ability to apply/remove all casts/splints.
- Ability to fit all durable medical equipment (DME).
- Understanding of proper aseptic techniques when applying bandages/dressings.
- Ability to educate patients regarding the care and use of all orthopedic devices such as casts/splints/DME.
- Current OTC from the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT), required.
- Current BLS certification, required upon hire; American Heart Association Healthcare Provider.
Each new hire candidate who is offered employment must pass a physical evaluation, urine drug screen and pre-employment background checks before starting work.
*Salary/Hourly Wage range based on experience.
