ABOUT THE POSITION

GIS Analyst - Transportation | Hybrid | Any VHB Office

VHB's Technology Enablement team is looking for a proficient GIS Analyst, ideally with experience using Esri's Roads & Highways extension to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise to manage, analyze, and visualize geospatial data pertinent to Transportation related projects and have minimum of 2 years of professional experience in Python. You will play a critical role in facilitating data-driven decisions and achieving project success in transportation initiatives.

Position may sit in any of our VHB offices (our list of office locations can be found here). We have a hybrid environment with a mixture of in office and remote days.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work for VHB in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Responsibilities

Data Collection and Management: Performs moderately complex analysis of spatial data using GIS technology (e.g., buffering, spatial overlays, distance calculations). Acquire, process, and manage spatial datasets using Esri's Roads & Highways tools. Data Maintenance: Maintain accurate records of roadway characteristics, traffic patterns, and infrastructure conditions. Diagnoses and troubleshoots GIS software across the entire GIS software stack. Data Analysis: Utilize Esri Roads & Highways to conduct spatial analysis and modeling to support road and highway project planning and operational efficiencies. Mapping and Visualization: Develop detailed and accurate maps with Esri Roads & Highways, presenting data in an accessible format for various stakeholders. Database Maintenance: Maintain and update GIS databases, ensuring data quality, integrity, and accessibility. Metadata Creation: Handle metadata creation and management. Integration and Collaboration: Collaborate with engineers, planners, and project managers, providing GIS support and integrating geospatial data within their workflows using Esri's Roads & Highways. Reporting and Documentation: Produce detailed reports, visual displays, and presentations that communicate spatial data analysis results and project insights effectively. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all geospatial work aligns with regulatory standards and best practices in the industry. Quality Control: Implement robust quality assurance processes to maintain data accuracy and reliability.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency with Esri Roads & Highways, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online. Knowledge of spatial analysis techniques and GIS data visualization. Familiarity with CAD software and knowledge of relational database management systems and the ability to use the SQL language is a plus. Ability to understand and automate repeated tasks using Python.
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of the transportation sector, including roadway design principles, highway maintenance operations, and traffic analysis.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex GIS data to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Project Management: Competent in managing multiple projects, delivering quality results within deadlines. Team oriented with ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with coworkers.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is required
  • Advanced proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online is required
  • 2 years of professional experience in Python is required
  • Python experience in transportation is preferred (i.e. to simulate traffic flow and optimize public transit schedules for improved efficiency and reduced congestion)
  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geospatial Sciences, Engineering, Planning, or Geography is required
  • Master's degree a plus and may be substituted for 1 year of experience
  • Proficiency in Esri Roads & Highways preferred
