Role Overview:
The Quality Engineer will utilize advanced, analytical tools and techniques to define, quantify, and improve product and process quality in a machine shop and assembly setting. Apply engineering / technical skills and statistical techniques to make recommendations and carry out quality improvements. Support manufacturing and new product development efforts. The focus of this position will be on continual improvement of existing processes and supporting the efforts of the development and process validation of new processes using lean manufacturing practices.
Work Environment: Rockford, IL; Onsite
Key Responsibilities:
- Primary responsibility is to assist in the management of the quality management system. This includes quality system requirements including test and inspection plans and product reliability, supplier quality program, risk management and to ensure compliance to ISO 9001:2008.
- Reviews quality standards, tolerances, and engineering changes.
- Investigate, establish, and implement requirements for inspection and testing methods, techniques, equipment, and facilities.
- Monitors quality feedback data to identify opportunities for process improvements and participates in the improvement efforts.
- Assist internal audit program and conduct internal audits as needed.
- Investigate and recommend alternatives to product designs and manufacturing methods.
- Performs inspections and sets quality assurance testing models for analysis of raw materials, materials in process, and finished products.
- Participate as a member of product planning and product implementation team.
- Participant and/or champion for Corrective Action and Preventative Action (CAPA) process.
- Work directly with customers to resolve quality issues.
- Works with manufacturing and engineering functions.
- Drive visual management into all aspects of the manufacturing environment
- Establish new processes to eliminate waste and streamline flow and processes using lean methodologies
- Optimize manufacturing processes to attain product quality, efficiency, and process repeatability.
- Develop lean manufacturing metrics.
- Share and standardize best practices and processes.
- Develop and administer standard work practices/employee training.
- Other duties and projects as assigned
- Define and implement the next iteration of Internet-connected consumer electronics with sensors, actuators (Internet of Things)
- Responsible for the designing, developing, analyzing and testing of actuators, motors, power electronics
- Lead analysis of vehicle loading paths in the chassis, body and powertrain subsystems
- Identify the impact of powertrain and chassis control calibrations on overall loading levels
- Identify key parameters in calibration settings that impact loading characteristics
- Lead the development/application of diagnostic tools to troubleshoot durability issues resulting
- Design, fabricate, and validate electromechanical prototypes
- Support hardware development and testing of devices
- Mechanical design for electronics packaging
- Optimize and refine systems for quality and manufacturability
- Establish and execute Design Verification test plans for embedded control software
- Manage the organized release of official control software versions to meet program content and timing requirements
- Work with Body Exterior engineers to identify and develop new hardware concepts and control strategies to support feature development
- Carry out to completion specific projects assigned by the Project or Department Manager
- Design a low-cost Automation System using microcontroller/PLC and Open-source Programming
- Study the Image Stitching Software Techniques and implement in Inspection System design
- Responsible for design of electrical circuits conducting electrical circuit simulations and electromagnetic simulations
- Define electrical requirements and select appropriate technology for electrical devices
- Work with electrical distribution team to optimize integration
- Work with controls team to ensure device and system controllability and appropriate failure mode effects management
Qualifications
- Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (preferred), science related technical degree, CQE certificate, or have demonstrated equivalent expertise through experience.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 requirements and proficiency with other industry standard quality techniques such as root cause analysis, 8D reporting, and the AIAG core tools including but not limited to PPAP, PFMEA, Control Plans and MSA, and APQP requirements.
- Experience in Test & Evaluation, DVP creation and coordination, Laboratory Environment is desirable
- 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment
- CMM Programming and operation desirable for Zeiss Dura Max with Calypso software
- Working knowledge of pneumatics and electronics and laboratory equipment including pressurized air sources and delivery systems, pressure and flow measurement equipment and electronic measuring devices. Working knowledge of measurement tools including micrometers, calipers, digital readout devices and multi-meters. Working knowledge of shop equipment including lathes, mills and hand tools.
- Knowledge of basic statistics, reliability analysis, and design of experiments is desirable.
- Positively communicate with customers internally and externally to address their needs promptly and follow through on commitments.
- Experience with Lean manufacturing and problem-solving tools (5S, Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping) preferred.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Effective written and oral communication skills relative to quality, technical and manufacturing issues.
- Ability to understand complex situations, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Advanced knowledge of the use of various hand-held and computer coordinate measuring devices.
- Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from subordinates, peers, managers, and customers.
- Knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook) and software products such as Minitab and the ability to use them effectively for report generation. Microsoft Visio and MOAE report generation a plus.
- Ability to use industry standard personal computers (PCs) and PC applications including Excel, Power Point and Word.
- Must be able to perform effective searches on the internet for procurement of test fixture supplies.
- Knowledge of DAQ Data Collection system is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of electrical theory and applications.
- Ability to understand and use ERP systems
- CQE certification through ASQ a plus.
- Lean Six Sigma Black Belt a plus
