What we are looking for:
As a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician you will be instrumental in providing a variety of support functions in our dermatopathology laboratory and responsible for supporting a multi-site dermatology practice. This individual delivers safe and accurate lab services, such as embedding, sectioning and staining, under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager and in collaboration with the healthcare team. This technician must demonstrate reliable clinical practices in a histology laboratory setting and knowledge and compliance with Lab-related regulations. This position will be responsible for ensuring lab support is appropriately met by performing the following duties:
What you'll do:
- Delivers safe and accurate lab services, under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager and in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Completes comprehensive laboratory technician training/orientation on Epiphany laboratory protocols, procedures and testing imperatives.
- Prepares, processes and sends out all specimens and forms, per OSHA safety labeling and handling protocols, for example, special stains not done in lab, including IHC.
- Perform administrative lab duties within scope of practice. This is to include follow up to trace/track necessary results, limited billing-specific duties related to testing.
- Provides feedback on status and/or reports to providers, as necessary.
- Assists with Mohs surgery by sectioning and staining slides for the dermatologist during surgery.
- Ensures completeness and accuracy of requisitions for all specimens prior to collection.
- Laboratory tasks related to receiving, organizing, and preparing patient tissue samples for macroscopic evaluation by the Grossing Technician. Including but not limited to confirming patient identity, accessioning specimens and preparing and correctly labeling specimen blocks.
- Gross entry - assisting with entering information provided by the Grossing Technician into the patient's electronic medical record
- Laboratory tasks related to receiving, organizing, and preparing patient tissue samples for microscopic evaluation by the Dermatopathologist.
- Assisting with laboratory send-outs to include slide and block requests
- General lab maintenance such as slide and block organization and storage and Maintenance of CLIA required records and documentation
- Assistance with completing and maintaining all compliance related paperwork to include temperature and humidity information, chemical reagent log sheets, patient information logs, and quality assurance forms.
- Provides excellent customer service to contacts in a competent and courteous, in person or on the telephone and answering or referring inquires.
- Responsible for accurately and timely completing documentation using both Electronic Medical Record and any required paper documentation while ensuring patient confidentiality.
- Ensures that blood/body fluids, biohazard materials, needle containers and potentially infectious waste are appropriately disposed of, according to infection control guidelines.
- Monitors expiration dates and takes action accordingly. Recognizes usage trends affecting unit supplies and makes recommendations for adjustments.
- Participates in staff meetings and workgroups by providing constructive input for practice improvements and solutions.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of two years of related laboratory experience as a technician, preferably in a physician practice or ambulatory environment.
- Histotechnician: Associate's degree and successful completion of certified program for laboratory.
- Histotechnologist (preferred): Bachelor of Science degree and certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
- Bachelor of Science degree (Preferred) or at minimum must have are 60 college credits to include 12 science credits (6 chemistry; 6 biology).
- All interested candidates must be certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
- Able to work Monday - Friday 8:00pm until 4:00am CT (3rd shift)
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Medical office, procedure/exam room and laboratory environment may include exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, biohazards or toxic substances. Daily activities may include standing, walking, sitting, bending and lifting items up to 30 lbs.
