Brief Job Overview/Summary

Under the administrative direction of a Director II level or higher administration, is responsible for independently performing a professional function or functions of unusual difficulty, sensitivity, and/or complexity; for functioning as an accomplished professional within the context of established college policies and procedures with minimal supervision and direction and/or supervises lower grade titles; does related work as required.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Provides confidential, short-term, student-centered, culturally responsive, and solution focused individual and group counseling to students who may be experiencing personal difficulties that interfere with their University adjustment and success
  • Conducts walk-in, triage, and crisis services. Conducts biopsychosocial assessments, makes clinical recommendations for appropriate level of care, and supports the linkage of students to resources based on those clinical recommendations
  • Maintains the timely completion of clinical documentation in accordance with professional standards and departmental requirements for documentation and storage of confidential files
  • Supports the regular evaluation of services to maintain an up-to-date understanding of counseling needs
  • Maintains confidential records of highly sensitive information due to HIPAA and FERPA laws
  • Performs other clinical, outreach, and psychoeducational duties
  • Provides supervision of master's level student interns (LPC, LCSW)
  • Creates, develops, and implements the intern training program. Counselors are responsible for teaching interns effective counseling skills, crisis management, electronic medical records, scheduling, and case management work
  • Provides ongoing evaluation of the interns' work and provides feedback on areas of improvement
  • Provides trainings and supervising of peer educators for drug and alcohol program, prevention efforts, and various mental health/volunteer events organized by the counseling staff, such as Lolla-no-booza, the Clothing Swap, Suicide Prevention Week, Spring Fling, Alcohol and Drug 101 (bi-weekly), and tabling events to provide outreach to local high school students
  • Provides supervision and consultation with support staff, TES workers, volunteers, and outreach support staff
  • Collaborates with many departments throughout campus, such as Goals Gear Up, Office of Global Engagement, Educational Opportunity Fund, Women's, Gender and Sexuality Center, Athletics, Stockton Cares, Office of Student Conduct, Residential Life, Stockton Police Department, Student Transition Program, Student Health Services, Office of Student Development, and Military and Veteran's Services
  • Develops and conducts training, workshops, and/or seminars for the campus community
  • Attends Open Houses and orientations, often creating and conducting workshops and training for new students, transfers, and parents/family members
  • Provides case management, consultation, referral services, and supportive counseling to students and families during their transition and during their time at Stockton. This role requires counselors to communicate with parents regarding student needs, educating parents during the orientation process, providing on and off-campus resources, and communicating with parents during a crisis/emergency of a student
  • Builds relationships with community organizations, hospitals, inpatient centers, private practice clinicians, drug and alcohol treatment facilities, and eating disorder treatment centers. Examples of community providers and agencies include: AtlantiCare, Cape Atlantic Liaison, Mental Health Association, Gen Psych, and various private practice clinicians
  • Responsible for collecting data following workshops and/or seminars and analyzing results
  • Conducts presentations related to assigned functions. For example, counselors in this role are instructed to conduct presentations on alcohol/drug use; mental health for First-Year seminars; effective communication and patient-provider role playing for DPT students; thriving in college; anger management among various other topics
  • Develops videos and training materials for faculty, staff, and students to be used in classrooms, orientations, and open houses
  • May create teaching materials and conduct psychoeducation groups and events, such as Mental Health First Aid, QPR training courses, Making Anger Work for You classes, Reinventing Your Life classes, anxiety management, meditation, coping skills Workshops, crisis counseling response groups, soft skills trainings, and racial literacy workshops
  • Conducts research related to assigned responsibilities, analyzes data, and interprets findings to faculty and staff
  • Maintains records and statistics of the students they see, services provided, and demographic information. This information is often requested by administrators and student affairs for accurate utilization data of services for specific populations, such as utilization of services by students of color, students of marginalized groups, or student veterans
  • Provides data and create reports, such as IACS, Middle States, and NASPA
  • Creates, implements, and disseminates surveys to students and interprets results
  • Creates policies and assists in frequent revisions of policies, such as the Policies and Procedures Manual for Galloway and the Policies and Procedures Manual for Atlantic City; Counseling/Crisis Emergency Procedures; Medicat One Counseling Procedures; and Intern Procedures.
  • Writes and applies for grants, manages grant budgets, oversees the implementation of grants, and hires students and staff as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Candidate must be licensed (LPC or LCSW) in New Jersey
  • New Jersey Supervision Certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience providing clinical mental health services to historically underrepresented populations (e.g., BIPOC, 1st generation students, low-income, etc.)
  • College counseling experience
  • Bilingual
