Messiah Lutheran School of Fairview Park, Ohio seeks Part-Time and Substitute Student Supervisors for Lunch and Recess for the 2023-2024 school year. Supervisors may be hired for 1-5 days per week, or may be hired on a substitute basis. Supervisors are generally needed between 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

About Messiah Lutheran School

Messiah is a small, Christian school in Fairview Park, immediately west of Cleveland, Ohio. Our history of academic excellence in Christian community began in 1954. We currently teach students in preschool through grade 8, and have one class per grade level. Our average class size is 12 students. We are best known for our family-like community environment, our close and caring relationships with students, our Christian faith integration, and our high academic standards. We maintain a strong relationship with our sponsoring congregation, Messiah Lutheran Church (a congregation of the ELCA).

Position Purpose
Student supervisors for lunch and recess help ensure the safety of students during their lunch and recess periods.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assists with lunch distribution
  • Supervises students while eating
  • Teaches, models, and reinforces health and safety practices surrounding lunch times.
  • Teaches, models, and reinforces health and safety practices for recess times.
  • Helps students learn games and actitivies for recess.
  • Teaches and supports healthy relationships and conflict resolution at recess.
  • Ensures student safety at recess.
  • Communicates student progress, needs, and concerns to teachers and administration.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
Additional Duties:
  • Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration, as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned
Equipment
Use standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
  • Ability to be patient, firm, and clear.
  • Ability to maintain composure and extend patience and support to struggling students.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to work outdoors.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments.
Ability to work outdoors in vairable during outdoor student activities.
Ability to move about and visually monitor for 2 hours.

Qualifications Profile:
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience working with children desirable.
