Head Swim Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Y is a leading nonprofit for strengthening community, and the nation's larger provider of swim lessons to increase skill and safety in and around water. This position provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director or Coordinator, the Head Swim Instructor is responsible for supervision of aquatics instructional staff, staff scheduling, course paperwork, class rosters and staff training.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Responsible for supervision of aquatics instructional staff, staff scheduling, course paperwork, class rosters and staff training.
2. Work with Aquatics Director/Coordinator to ensure staff wages remain in designated budget.
3. Order supplies based on budget and need.
4. Work with Marketing Director and Aquatics Director/Coordinator to advertise swim lessons.
5. Work with Human Resources to advertise job openings in a timely fashion.
6. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
7. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
8. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
9. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
10. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
11. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
12. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
13. Trains and supervise class aides as assigned.
14. Ability to make independent decisions, which adhere to the purpose, mission and goals of the YMCA.
15. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
16. Answer and return phone calls in regards to questions about staff and facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Recommended Certifications: Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid certification.
2. Ability to work unsupervised.
3. Minimum 2 years experience in an aquatics facility.
4. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
5. At least 18 years of age.
6. Requirements within 30 days of hire include completion of: Y Swim Lesson Instructor; Child Abuse Prevention; New Employee Orientation

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.

Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.

Ability to deliver various programs/classes/activities as required
