Purpose
University Marketing and Communications (UMAC) seeks an Associate Director of Social Media Strategy to lead the University's social media team and oversees the strategic planning, management, and execution of content and engagement strategies for the University's central social media channels. This role develops highly creative content and campaigns, enhancing brand awareness, increasing engagement, and driving communication efforts that align with the university's mission, vision, and values. The associate director will also lead coordination of campus-wide social media strategy by collaborating with colleges, schools, and units to ensure a cohesive voice and message across all social channels.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and execute a University-wide social media strategy that drives the University's strategic goals, strengthens its reputation, and fosters engagement with key audiences, including prospective and current students, faculty, alumni, and the external community. Collaborate with internal stakeholders (Admissions, Athletics, Texas Exes, academic departments, etc.) to amplify their messages and ensure they align with the university social media strategy. Build relationships with influencers and brand advocates to enhance the university's reach and engagement with key audiences.

  • Oversee the social media content calendar and day-to-day social activities, including content creation, curation, scheduling, posting, and community management across major platforms such as Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, and other emerging platforms. Ensure regular, consistent, and engaging content aligned with key university initiatives, events, and campaigns. Monitor comments and behaviors to assist in issues management response efforts.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop an effective and productive UMAC social media team, ensuring high-quality content creation, continuous improvement, and professional development. Manage the social team's budget, including paid social advertising campaigns, to ensure the effective use of resources.

  • Manage social media analytics and stay up-to-date on social trends, tools, and best practices to incorporate the latest technologies and strategies into the university's social media presence. Report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of social media efforts, provide actionable insights, and make data-driven decisions to optimize content and engagement strategies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.

  • 5-7 years of experience managing social media in a professional setting, preferably in higher education or a large organization.

  • Proven experience in developing and executing successful social media strategies and campaigns.

  • Strong understanding of social media platforms, algorithms, and analytics tools.

  • Excellent communication, writing, and storytelling skills.

  • Experience with social media management tools such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social, or equivalent.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.

  • Professional experience managing social media strategy on behalf of a major brand with at least a 500k combined following.

  • Expertise in managing and optimizing paid social media campaigns

  • Experiencing working at or with media outlets.

  • Experience crafting or pitching stories for content marketing or media placement.

  • Knowledge of photo and video editing tools is a plus.

  • Experience in higher education, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations.

Salary Range

$100,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Austin, TX and is expected to work on campus.

  • May work in all weather conditions.

  • May travel. May work extended hours during events. Nights and weekends may be required during peak periods.
