Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) - Anesthesia

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist surgeons and work with surgery technicians
    to create anesthesia protocols for everyday use.
  • Manage both routine and critical cases under
    anesthesia.
  • Assist with training of surgery and anesthesia
    technicians.
  • Place a multi-lumen catheter in either a peripheral or central vein and utilize the proper technique to secure and maintain the catheter and insert catheters (urinary and arterial).
  • Perform the following laboratory test utilizing
    the appropriate analyzer: Blood gases, hematocrit, total protein, BUN, Glucose,
    Creatinine, electrolytes (serum and urine), activated clotting time, PT/PTT,
    osmolality, colloid oncotic pressure, and lactate.
  • Utilize an Anesthesia Ventilator.
  • Assess an emergent or critically ill patient's
    condition and initiate appropriate action.
  • Calculate drug doses and administer medications.
  • Use patient monitoring equipment (ECG, Invasive
    or non-invasive BP, CVP, ET-CO2, Pulse Oximeter, etc.)
  • Intubate patients with an endotracheal tube and
    care for patients with artificial airways.
  • Determine the appropriate peripheral and central catheterization site(s), insert the catheter, and utilize the proper technique(s) to secure and
    maintain the catheter.
  • Take diagnostic quality radiographs.
  • Provide continuing education lectures internally
    and for staff at DVM
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in veterinary surgery and anesthesia
  • Must Have VTS Certification
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Anesthesia
    or Equivalent Experience
  • Work experience in a fast-paced, multi-veterinarian hospital, emergency/referral practice, or hospital
TECHNICAL ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Knowledge of normal patient vitals for awake, sedated, and anesthetized
    patients
  • Accuracy in calculating and delivering anesthetic agents, fluids, and
    CRIs
  • Comprehensive understanding and experience with
    anesthetic monitoring is required
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and commitment to building relationships with colleagues and clients
  • Knowledge and care with equipment maintenance,
    cleaning, sterility, and troubleshooting; willingness to read equipment manuals
    and consult with vendors if repair/upgrades needed
  • Experience using common emergency and critical
    care therapies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide intense moment-to-moment
    monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized
    patients.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are required
  • Ability to deliver exceptional client service
  • Must be able to regularly lift up to 50 pounds (work requires lifting, carrying, and restraining animals with assistance from other staff for animals weighing over 50 pounds)
