JOB SUMMARY
The primary function of an employee in this position is to lead, oversee, and provide instruction for the day-to-day operations of programs and to supervise participants. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Recreation Programs Superintendent, although some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The principal duties of the position may be performed in an indoor or outdoor environment which may expose the employee to adverse weather conditions or excessive noise.

- Provide leadership and guidance and to camp counselors in the day-to-day operations of programs
- Provide supervision to program participants.
- Responsible for handling equipment needed for various activities to include, but not limited to taking out balls, bats, etc. and returning to proper place at the end of activities.
- Maintain supplies inventory (craft/games/toys).
- Help maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Set up and take down tables and chairs at the beginning and end of camp.
- Lead a variety of camp programs including but not limited to group games, crafts, free play, swimming, and bicycle riding
- Reports all infractions or issues to immediate supervisor.
- Checking areas at the beginning of the day to make sure they are clean, healthy, and free from hazards.
- Responsible for the safety and wellbeing of program participants.
- Initiate participant counts periodically throughout the day, including field trips to the waterfront
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Age-appropriate interactions and communication techniques.
- Facility/equipment set-up and tear-down procedures.
- Basic First Aid and safety precautions.
- Open water safety protocols
- Teach participants in the fundamental skills and techniques for various program activities.
- Work with participants in group or individual settings according.
- Safely and comfortably swim in open water.
- Follow directions from senior staff members.
- Communicate effectively with the public, peers, participants, and other City employees.
- Demonstrate effective customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person or on a telephone.
- Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written word instructions and monitor participants.
- Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, permits the employee to teach and demonstrate skills for assigned sports activity.
- Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and balance, with or without accommodation, which permits the employee run, jump, throw, or perform physical tasks specific to assigned sports activity.
- Jobs in this class require performing repetitive motions in fingering and hand/wrist/arm movements. Related job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, lifting or moving up to 25 pounds and frequently and 50 pounds occasionally, and stooping, bending, crouching and reaching.
Desired Experience:
- Any combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Must enjoy working with youth and being outside
- First Aid/CPR certification from an approved agency
- Satisfactory criminal background check for applicants 18 years of age or older.
