The Alaska Public Interest Research Group conducts advocacy, education, and research to support Alaskan communities. AKPIRG works across five issue areas: energy democracy, broadband access, economic justice, good government, and language access. AKPIRG is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization first incorporated in 1974.

Position Description:

The Operations Specialist supports staff across AKPIRG's programs in Language Access, Economic Justice, Energy Democracy, Broadband Access, and Good Government. The role has a mixture of internal responsibilities, such as managing staff pay and benefits, and external responsibilities, such as initiating and receiving payment on behalf of AKPIRG. The Operations Specialist also serves as HR when staff have questions about compensation and benefits. Applicants should be very detail-oriented, have good organizational skills, and be comfortable working with (multiple) deadlines. Prior experience in accounting, nonprofit management, and/or HR is preferred but not required, as the role also allows for professional development.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Run biweekly payrolls
  • Manage staff retirement and healthcare benefits
  • Work closely on bookkeeping with AKPIRG's accountant
  • Send invoices and pay received invoices on AKPIRG's behalf
  • Process staff reimbursements and check requests
  • Assist the Executive Director and Deputy Director with budgets and bookkeeping
  • Onboard/offboard staff
  • Monitor AKPIRG mail
  • Monitor bank account and work with Development Lead and Executive Director on grant funding statuses
  • Support in other operational matters as they arise
Qualifications:
  • Commitment to quality and care in the operations and functions of the organization.
  • Very organized, with strong attention to detail.
  • Able to meet consistent deadlines and work independently.
  • Strong values alignment with AKPIRG's work.
  • Familiar with Excel/Google Sheets, and able to learn new systems quickly.
  • Works well with others, and responds to individual requests in a timely manner.
  • Ideally has a background in payroll and benefits administration. Experience with BambooHR and/or Quickbooks is a plus.
