GENERAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Swim Instructor will provide direct leadership, instruction, motivation, and a safe environment for students in swimming classes. The Swim Instructor should also act as a liaison and champion for the YMCA's core values.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing and genuine for all members and guests.
- Exercise mature judgment and strong decision making, especially as it relates to safety.
- Develop rapport and maintain meaningful relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Able to work with other staff as part of a team.
- Conduct swim classes in accordance with Y of the USAs Swimming Lesson Program in an enthusiastic and exciting way while maximizing swimmer participation in every class period.
- Motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics.
- Complete and turn in all class paperwork as required by supervisor.
- Communicate student progress to participants and/or their parents throughout the session.
- Maintain a positive and responsible attitude and demeanor at all times.
- Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings is mandatory.
- Uphold the core values of the YMCA when interacting with people within the YMCA facilities and within the community.
- Work scheduled shifts including weekend shifts. Arrangements for substitutes must be previously approved by the Aquatics Director.
- Must be able to understand the way children learn at various ages and relate to them in a fun-loving, engaging, and captivating way.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Individuals considered for this position must take and pass an advanced swimming test. They must also have a current state approved First-Aid certification and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
Individuals in this job must be at least 15 years of age and have the following abilities: exercise mature judgment and sound decision making; ensure safety of participants; relate to people in a positive, but firm manner; be observant; be able to teach in hot, humid environments; effectively communicate information on YMCA programs to members and participants; lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and have full range of body movement.
