Stonington Public Schools is seeking TWO first shift custodians at Stonington High School.
These openings have anticipated start dates of 12/13/24 and 1/29/25.
This is a union position that falls under the Maintenance and Custodian Collective Bargaining Agreement.
This position is full-time, 40 hours per week.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Working knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment
  • Knowledge of the English language to understand operating instructions for cleaning equipment and materials and safety and accident prevention
REQUIREMENTS
  • A working knowledge of building maintenance and their related systems.
  • A working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to maintain a working knowledge of changes in systems and equipment.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to read.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing repair or maintenance problems as necessary.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with Town department personnel and private contractors.
OVERVIEW

This job consists of routine work to maintain the cleanliness of an assigned facility and grounds. An employee in this class, under the supervision of an administrator or director, receives general direction and leadership from the maintenance supervisor. This employee performs cleaning and maintenance functions. Work is evaluated through observation while work is in progress and by inspection of completed assignments. This position requires completing tasks independently and exercising considerable judgment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Given the nature of the position, it is not possible to list every job task and responsibility. The list below is intended to describe various types of work that may be performed, but it is not meant to be all-inclusive.

In coordination with the Maintenance Supervisor and the Building Principal, the Custodian will:
  • Perform building inspections to ensure building security
  • Clean buildings by sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing, sealing, buffing, washing rooms, vacuuming, washing surfaces, etc.
  • Perform ground maintenance by mowing, watering, sweeping, and weeding
  • Move and store furniture and equipment
  • Remove snow and ice
  • Performs other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS
  • Must take absolute safety precautions due to exposure to hazardous conditions, including severe burns and life-threatening situations.
  • Works in all weather conditions, including cold, heat, rain, or snow.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb ladders up to two stories.
  • Must have physical strength and agility sufficient to complete cleaning and other maintenance tasks.
  • Must be able to see far away and close up to distinguish colors and hear normal sounds with some background noise.
