Our Communications team includes PR/Media Relations, Internal Communications, Events, Design, Community & Social, and other strategic comms functions. This team's ethos is to support OpenAI's mission and goals by clearly and authentically explaining our technology, values, and approach to safely building powerful AI.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced internal communications leader with 8+ years of experience at rapidly growing global companies to lead and evolve our internal communications strategy across People & Corporate Functions. In this role, you will ensure that OpenAI employees receive timely, clear, and accurate information that aligns with our mission and values. This role collaborates closely with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to reinforce and scale OpenAI's culture, support employee engagement, and navigate complex communication needs during key transitions and change management initiatives.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:
  • Design and execute comprehensive internal communications strategies aligned with company objectives, ensuring consistency and clarity in messaging, with a specific focus on People and Corporate Function-driven initiatives.
  • Guide employees through organizational changes with clear and proactive communications that align with OpenAI's values. This can include, but is not limited to, preparing deliverables around policy updates, organizational changes, and new employee programs to build understanding and cultivate engagement.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders in response to sensitive or complex issues to address concerns thoughtfully and transparently.
  • Optimize internal communications channels to ensure employees have access to timely, relevant, and trustworthy information. You will focus on curating content, reducing information overload, and reinforcing information hierarchies.
  • Craft messages, talking points, Q&As, scripts, and visual content that embody OpenAI's thoughtful, transparent, and mission-driven approach. Maintain a voice and tone that resonates with a diverse, curious, and highly engaged workforce.
  • Produce segments and support company All Hands meetings, Leadership Q&As, and other strategic programs to enhance the employee experience.
  • Drive employee engagement by gathering feedback and continuously optimizing strategies based on data and employee insights.
  • Measure and assess the effectiveness of internal communications programs, adjusting as needed to maximize impact.
You might thrive in this role if you:
  • 8+ years of experience in internal communications or corporate communications.
  • Proven ability to seamlessly adapt to shifting priorities and evolving demands within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing large-scale, strategic internal communications plans in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex concepts.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines.
  • Experience collaborating with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to drive initiatives.
  • Ability to lead in a matrixed environment and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proficiency with digital communication platforms and tools, such as intranet systems, employee apps, and content management systems.
  • A successful track record in change management and crisis communications.
