The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine seeks a full-time non-tenure-eligible Clinician-Educator at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Provide leadership for the SRALab Spinal Cord Innovation Center, accountable for overall success and effectiveness of entire Center (as well as for clinical care of his/her patients). Tasks include developing and communicating a vision, promoting patient care quality and safety, and integrating research and patient care.
  2. Establish practice standards for the SRALab Spinal Cord Innovation Center, and with others (e.g., nurses, allied health staff, research leaders), oversees quality of interdisciplinary clinical care, including appropriate development and implementation of clinical protocols, performance standards and policies across system of care.
  3. Partner with other SRALab Research Chairs to ensure that clinical care is evidence-based, staff are involved in research activities, research priorities are established, and scientifically validated innovations are adopted into clinical practice.
  4. As practicing physician, ensure appropriateness and effectiveness of patient treatment plan providing care in the SRALab Spinal Cord Innovation Center; oversees and coordinates involvement of physicians, nursing and allied health staff to resolve complex medical problems inpatient and outpatient care, in addition to inpatient consultations, predominantly for patients with spinal cord injury, and primarily at SRALab and affiliated institutions, conducting assessment, care, and rehabilitation management of people with a variety of disabling conditions.
  5. Actively participate in assigned SRALab medical staff committees, chairing when appropriate.
  6. Recruit, hire, mentor and develop qualified staff capable of providing care consistent with SRAlab's Mission and standards; ensures competencies and other specialized skills of Attending Physicians within Spinal Cord Innovation Center; directly supervises and appraises physicians and, when necessary, initiates discipline or termination procedures.
  7. Share responsibility with the SRALab Spinal Cord Innovation Center Spinal Cord Clinical and Administrative Managers for Planning, developing, implementing and evaluating operations, including managing patient volumes and establishing annual budget for volumes, Oversee Spinal Cord Innovation Center operations, Develop and manage Center against set of clinical, service and financial outcomes that reflect optimal performance and are consistent with SRAlab standards and expectations.
  8. Conduct didactic teaching in the form of lectures and one-on-one interactions, in addition to clinical bedside teaching, in inpatient and outpatient settings. Audiences will include medical students, residents, fellows, allied health professionals, and practicing physician faculty. The main focus of his teaching efforts will be primarily in various areas related to spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Ensure quality of the SCI fellowship and Resident SCI rotation experiences.
  9. Pursue intra- and extra-mural funding to support research, including influencing and overseeing growth of federal funding.
  10. Pursue scholarly activity through scientific presentation and publication.
  11. Participate in research and medical education activities for residents and fellows, including Grand Rounds, continuing education and in-service training.
  12. Actively represent and promote the NUFSM PM&R Department and SRAlab throughout region, nation and world to all key university, clinical and business constituencies.

Qualified candidates will be board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Spinal Cord Medicine and licensed to practice medicine. The individual should qualify for appointment at the academic rank of Associate Professor or higher at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The person should have a minimum of 10 years' progressive clinical and leadership experience in patient care and programs directed at the rehabilitation of individuals with conditions and diseases affecting the spinal cord, demonstrated successful research experience in the area of spinal cord injury care and function, proven ability to develop and lead large, complex, multi-dimensional team that is quality- and outcome-oriented, patient-care-service driven, and demonstrated success with progressive organizational responsibilities, including hiring/firing staff and management of clinicians/physicians, budgetary responsibilities, program development and growth; solid quantitative skills necessary to initiate and review clinical and other business analyses.
