The Veterinary Surgical Nurse Lead helps establish order and efficiency in the clinic by prioritizing surgical services and directing the Vet Assistants and Vet Technicians in the most effective way to get daily tasks done. The Surgical Veterinary Technician Lead will oversee, and help coordinate the surgical load while creating an environment of teamwork in which quality medicine is delivered.

Reports to: Practice Manager, Medical Director, Nurse Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Veterinary Surgical Nurse Lead is the liaison between the doctor and administrative staff, to the Vet Assistants, and Vet Technicians. The Veterinary Surgical Nurse Lead will ensure that all policies and procedures are being executed while ensuring a safe work environment. The Veterinary Surgical Nurse Lead role will also be responsible for stepping into the surgical nurse position and assisting the Veterinarian in performing surgical procedures and ensuring the quality of care for the patient before, during, and after their procedure along with upholding strict client communication standards, as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

General Knowledge and Tasks

  • Perform all duties expected of a Surgical Veterinary Technician. Demonstrate comfort with using anesthesia machines, ECG, and medical math calculations.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are being followed.
  • Help report all work injuries to workman's comp
  • Supervise, direct, and coordinate the activity of the surgical veterinary technician crew
  • Coordinate and prioritize surgical procedures and deposits.
  • Primary responsibility is to be a director, instructor, supervisor and act as a surgical technician.
  • Follow and enforce all controlled drug policies and procedures.
Client-Interaction Tasks
  • Use clients' and patients' names during conversations.
  • Placate and/or compensate clients distressed by long waits, scheduling glitches, and other problems. Help de-escalate upset clients.
  • Provide and promote excellent customer service by demonstrating a desire to assist and serve others and meet and exceed client expectations.
  • Provide estimates and schedule surgeries.
Hospital Outreach
  • Coordinating with other hospitals to develop new relationships and increase business opportunities through referrals
  • Help facilitate collecting and sending records from referral hospitals for referral surgeries.
  • Maintain ongoing tracking and appropriate documentation on referrals to promote team awareness and ensure patient safety.
  • Ensure that referrals are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Assist with in-person Hospital Visits with Surgical Doctors and tasks including CEs.
Human-Resource Management Tasks
  • Promote a positive attitude among staff.
  • Follow proper documentation procedures when handling any employee disciplinary actions
  • Work with the team to ensure proper staffing for call-outs.
  • With the assistance of the practice manager and/or the practice's owner(s), initiate disciplinary actions against employees. Provide verbal or written warnings for inappropriate work-related behaviors, and clearly state consequences for continued problems. Follow established guidelines.
  • Determine adequate staffing needs and make management aware of these needs.
  • Give feedback to the practice manager on possible new hires
  • May be given the task to do an initial phone interview with potential candidates
  • Ensure quality of medical notes. Do reviews of medical estimates and surgical notes.
Training Tasks
  • Train new and existing staff to follow policy and procedures and OSHA guidelines. Keep records of all training meetings.
  • Supervise staff members who fall under your guidance and/or as directed by the practice manager. Establish work priorities for staff members under your supervision. Ensure that work is completed in a proper, professional, and timely manner. Maintain an efficient workflow. Seek out opportunities to further train or retrain employees.
  • Help develop in-house staff-training materials that expedite the training of staff in effective and cost-efficient manners.
  • Help create tier training systems and ensure team members are actively participating and growing within their role. Sedation vs healthy pets, vs critical vs orthopedic
  • Participate in and/or organize staff and training meetings. Be willing and able to teach various skills to other staff members.

  • Ability to act as a facilitator and/or liaison between support staff and the Practice Manager, Nurse Manager, Medical Director, or doctors.

  • Assist the Practice Manager and Nurse Manager with performance evaluations of staff.
  • Assist the Practice Manager and Nurse Manager with disciplinary action of staff when warranted and/or upon request.
  • Coordinating staff lunches as to not upset the flow of the practice or sacrifice patient care
  • Ability to mentor all staff members (assistants, technicians, doctors) and assist in training of the Protocols, Policies and Standard of Care.
  • Encouragement of camaraderie among staff and discouraging negativity and gossip
  • Anticipation of problems/needs and ability to take action to prevent problems within the flow of the practice.
  • Maintaining the WAAH standard for quality of medicine and client care
  • Assist the Practice Manager and Nurse Manager with additional administrative duties (technician schedule, new hire screening/orientation, inventory ordering, DEA cycle counting, resolving discrepancies and controlled waste, client conflict resolution, etc.) upon request/hospital need

  • Pay: $26.00 - $30.00 per hour (based on experience in surgery, dentistry and anesthesia)

  • Education:
    • Education: Minimum of 2 year Associate's degree, or equivalent completion of an Accredited Veterinary Technician Program
    • License: Certified Veterinary Technician license in good standing
  • Veterinary experience:
    • 4 years of experience in a veterinary hospital (Preferred)
    • 2 years of experience in a veterinary hospital with anesthetic, surgery and dental experience (Required)
