Position Title: Crime Victim Advocate (Sexual Assault)

Job Status: Full Time; Term; Non-Exempt; Hourly

Department: Advocacy & Education

Location: Albuquerque

Reports To: Advocacy & Education Director

Number of People Supervised: 0

POSITION PURPOSE

Primary function of this position is to provide advocacy, technical assistance, information, referrals, and outreach to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities who are victims of crimes with an emphasis on victims of sexual assault.

Performance Measures: A successful Victim Advocate will produce positive outcomes in the following areas: Provide advocacy services to victims during investigation and court proceedings; technical assistance to medical and counseling professionals, interdisciplinary team members, family and significant others who are the support network for a victim; gather knowledge and resource materials to answer questions, provide information and referral to victims; create outreach materials and deliver presentations on the impact of sexual assault; gather data and information for written reports to funding sources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities to navigate the medical, investigative, judicial and court systems in addition to navigating available support services (counseling, cultural healing services).
• Provide technical assistance to individual's support systems including medical providers on disability-specific issues related to sexual assault.
• Refer calls as appropriate to other sexual assault services organizations.
• Collaborate with other agencies and organizations to assure appropriate services are provided to individuals.
• Creation of publications and outreach materials.
• Creation and maintenance of state-wide informational resources.
• Collect data and complete reports for funding sources.
• Maintain certification as a Victim's advocate.
• Promote and support the mission of The Arc of New Mexico.
• Routine travel in a six-county area; some intermittent overnight travel might be required.

Other Duties as Assigned and that meet the minimum qualifications of this position.

EDUCATION& RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE

Education Level/ Years of Related Work Experience:

(minimum & preferred educational requirements necessary to perform this job successfully)

High School Diploma/GED is required with minimum of 1 year of experience in a support or advocate position for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology or criminal justice preferred, with experience in sexual assault services and paralegal or similar experience preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

Required & Preferred

Proficiency in technical areas such as Microsoft Office; including Word, Outlook, Access, and Excel.

Excellent oral communication skills reflecting solid customer service both in-person and via the telephone;

Ability to relate well in cross-cultural environments;

Ability to effectively collaborate with staff;

Ability to use time effectively;

Ability to focus on details;

Ability to adapt to shifting priorities

Ability to position and promote opportunities

Ability and willingness to travel locally to meet agency needs

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will be expected to work in a variety of settings including legal and court room settings. Routine travel within a six-county area; intermittent overnight stays; flexible; Routine office environment. Regular work week with occasional early evening or weekend hours.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (Describe any specific conditions for employment relative to this position)

Must be able to pass comprehensive background check.

Must have car, valid driver's license, and meet the required automobile insurance minimums for the State of N.M.
