Sterile Processing Coordinator

Job Description Summary:

This position oversees the daily functions of the sterile processing department and staff. Responsible for training staff to ensure work is performed per policies, procedures, standards and regulations. Processes and sterilizes instruments and assists in cleaning and turning over same day surgery rooms.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in sterile processing with knowledge base in all areas, i.e.: decontamination, sterile packaging, and instrument assembly required.

  • Must successfully obtain one (1) of the below within eighteen (18) months of hire required:

○ Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) AKA

○ Certified Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)

  • Sterile Processing Technician Certification through approved, accredited Sterile Processing organization required after eighteen (18) months of hire date.

  • Familiar with endoscopic procedures and cleaning of scopes preferred.

  • Current CPR Certification preferred.

  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.

  • Commitment to working in a team environment and maintaining confidentiality as needed.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.

  • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.

Job Specific Duties:

  • Processes, maintains quality control, sterilizes, and assembles instruments, scopes, linen and supplies needed in the assigned area(s) per department policies and procedures.

  • Accurately assembles instruments trays and prepares for sterilization while meeting or exceeding 95% accuracy. Maintains current instrument tray cards and prepares surgical instrument set and/or trays according to instrument tray cards.

  • Properly labels all supplies to be sterilized with name of set/instruments and initials. Keeps records of all sterilization cycles and biological indicators according to policy.

  • Operates sterilizers according to the manufacturer's instructions and recommendations. Notifies assigned leadership or designee, maintenance personnel, and vendor in the event of a mechanical breakdown or potential problems. Coordinates maintenance and repairs as needed.

  • Retrieves all supplies from a load that has a positive biological indicator and notifies assigned leadership according to policy.

  • Stays abreast of the daily surgery schedule to plan for availability of sterile trays. Keeps instruments sterile and ready for after-hours emergent cases. Coordinates with total joint reps to be prepared for cases.

  • Checks and records temperature and humidity of sterile processing and all surgical suites per department protocol.

  • Keeps the Sterile Processing department clean and free of dust per department procedures.

  • Receives training and direction from Materials Management leadership in regard to coordination and maintaining the ordering system for stock and non-stock supplies, instruments, and implants via computer requisitions and MediTech.

  • Checks supplies daily that are used by other units in the facility. Performs daily round making, picking up dirty equipment and returning sterilized equipment. Continually checks for any outdates of sterile items and packaging integrity.

  • Performs filing and record keeping, inventory control and investigates back orders. Coordinates with assigned leadership the annual inventory of supplies. Keeps records of all repair dates and servicing of the sterilizers, all sterilizer loads, and reviewing each load monthly for EPS, System 1E machines, all autoclaves, and V-Pro.

  • Keeps record of all sterilization for other departments, facilities and charges as needed.

  • Gathers required statistics and prepares reports as directed by the assigned leadership.

  • Works with assigned leadership to ensure proper staff coverage/scheduling of assigned area(s).

  • Maintains a log of all instruments/items loaned to other facilities.

  • Maintains effective communications. Promotes positive work climate. Demonstrates ability to work with others in a team effort and effectively communicates role expectations.

  • Keeps assigned leadership informed of any changes in status.

  • Accurately conveys lab data, surgery schedule changes, departmental scheduling, and physician messages appropriately.

  • Meets established departmental goals for patient quality and safety initiatives as well as defined performance improvement activities.
