SUMMARY

The Optometrist Assistant assists the Optometrist in the provision of quality patient care. Participates in the smooth and efficient operation of the department. Assists in the care, treatment, and education of optometry patients. Provides services to patients, staff, and others respectfully and courteously. Works collaboratively with appropriate staff to ensure effective services and exercises prudent stewardship of financial and other resources

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
• A high school diploma or equivalent
• An associate’s degree in medical assisting may be a benefit
• An optometric assistant certification may be a benefit
• Bilingual English – Spanish is a plus

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
• None

ABILITIES/SKILLS
• Inventory maintenance and sterilization of equipment
• Attention to detail
• Strong administrative and organizational skills
• Understanding of how to conduct diagnostic tests
• Strong listening skills to ensure complete patient history
• Superior Customer Service

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Obtains and records patient’s preliminary case history
• Maintains records, schedules appointments, performs bookkeeping, correspondence, and filing
• Prepares patient for vision examination; assists in testing for near and far acuity, depth perception,

macula integrity, color perception, and visual field, utilizing ocular testing apparatus
• Instructs patient in care and use of glasses or contact lenses
• Modifies contact lenses
• Maintains the inventory of materials and cleans instruments
• Assists in the fabrication of eyeglasses or contact lenses
• Other duties as assigned
