JOB TYPE

Classification: Nonexempt

Supervises Positions: No

Contract terms are the same for both Staff Extender and External Travelers which is 13 weeks
  • Staff Extenders may request up to 40 hours of time off (unpaid) per 13 weeks.
  • Staff Extender contracts can be extended in 13-week intervals. Extensions begin immediately at the end of contract
  • Staff Extenders may have two contract extensions offered for up to 39-week total
  • Staff Extenders have the option to convert to regular employment with UVA CH; at any time..
  • After 39 weeks, if a Staff Extender chooses not to convert to regular employment, the Staff Extenders must separate from UVA CH for a minimum of 6 months (24 weeks) in order to be eligible to apply as a Staff Extender again.
JOB SUMMARY

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The employee may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.
  • Responsible for providing therapy services consistent with licensure to clients including evaluation of patient, establishing plan of care, implementing treatment, directing, and educating patient and/or caregiver and documentation of the above.
  • Supervise therapy assistants, technicians, students, and volunteers as applicable.
  • Communicate with other health care providers regarding client care and treatment plans
  • Provide training and education for hospital staff as requested.
  • Complete patient documentation in a timely manner to meet regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Attend continuing education programs and present findings to appropriate staff as applicable.
  • Review and complete all insurance authorization requirements for patients in a timely manner.
  • Assist with performance improvement for rehab department and hospital.
  • Understand use and precautions of any treatments and equipment used.
  • Positively contributes to the departmental financial performance/productivity.
Patient Care: Delivers care that is consistent with the team member's discipline in accordance with the specific therapy practice act, guidelines, and code of ethics of the respective organization, i.e., APTA, ASHA, AOTA.
  • Completes patient evaluations and treatments independently while maintaining patient safety.
  • Appropriately seeks guidance and assistance when necessary.
  • Independently establishes/implements treatment goals and plans based on patient input and evaluation and assessment results.
  • Reassesses outcomes and modifies goals and plans to meet changing needs of the patient.
  • Schedules patient activities according to patient individual needs.
Teamwork: Develops and maintains positive relationships with team members and coworkers.
  • Functions as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Accepts responsibility for actions; seeks, accepts, and acts positively upon feedback from others.
  • Shares responsibility for effective internal communications through a team approach.
  • Organizes individual patient caseload in collaboration with team workload demands.
  • Performs daily administrative/office activities to ensure efficient flow of care within team.
Technical Competency: Demonstrates technical competencies and job knowledge as it pertains to rehabilitative care.
  • Acquires and maintains knowledge of clinical therapy practice by identifying continuing education needs and participating in educational opportunities.
  • Provides orientation and guidance to new rehabilitation staff in work area as requested.
The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master's Degree (MS or M. Ed) from an accredited SLP program.

Experience: No experience necessary. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure: Virginia State Speech Pathology License or Compact Privilege required. Current ASHA certification or completion of ASHA certification within 15 months of hire..
