PURPOSE STATEMENT: To receive/check-in merchandise, assure that merchandise received matches invoice, and return damages product for credit.

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. To prepare the back room for receipt of merchandise and unload trucks.
  2. To count and inspect merchandise and match to invoice.
  3. To keep receiving area secure and damage reclaim area neat and organized.
  4. To assure the safety of self, customers and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a supervisor of any potential hazard immediately. Pick up/remove all broken containers, packing materials/boxes from the backroom floor.
  5. To perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and manager, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers during peak periods of business.
  6. To understand the operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, case cutter, pallet jack and fork lift (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, fork lift and baler).
  7. To use stacking techniques that will prevent damage to product.
  8. To remove trash from area, operate the baler, put the compacted bale on a pallet and load salvage onto trucks.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receiving Clerks report directly to the Grocery Manager or Store Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
  1. Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
  2. Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/vendors concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
  3. Able to pass basic physical examination and drug screen.
  4. A stable work and educational history.
  5. The ability to read and write English. The able to read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, invoices, printed paper and forms.
  6. Make judgments concerning receiving, inspection of merchandise as to the extent of unsalable product damage, and the placement of case/pallets in storage and overhead racks.
  7. Able to move and stack product so that it will not be damaged.
  8. Good interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Prior experience in a related type of job.
  3. Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, pallet jack and fork lift. (Must be 18 years or older to operate pallet jacks, baler, and forklift.)
TASKS OF THE JOB - This job generally includes:
  1. Mobility:
    • To move cases from truck/pallet to backroom for storage, approximately 50 yards.
    • To stack cases on floor/skid/rack/shelf.
    • To move cardboard/packing material to the baler, approximately 50 yards.
    • To move excess cases/damaged product from damage storage area to the truck, approximately 50 yards.
    • To move through the entire backroom of the store for supplies/product/ maintenance equipment and return, approximately 75 yards.
  2. Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 8 hours in duration.
  3. Lift and stack empty pallets from floor to 72 inches overhead.
  4. Lift a maximum of 100 lbs. from 6 inches to 48 inches.
  5. Lift a maximum of 75 lbs. from 6 inches to 84 inches on to overhead/backroom storage rack.
  6. Move cardboard into baler, approximately 4 feet. (Must be 18 years or older to move cardboard into baler.)
  7. Carry a maximum of 100 lbs. up to 15 feet.
  8. Pick up/move/sort/ (a/an) case/item/trash/from floor/shelf/ ground/pallet/rack storage.
  9. Use maintenance and product transportation equipment.
  10. Place merchandise/cases on the top of grocery overhead/backroom storage shelves/rack, up to 84 inches from the floor.
  11. Reach forward/down up to 36 inches to attain merchandise on stocking cart or pallets.
  12. Reach forward/down up to 36 inches to clean backroom shelves/floor area or control maintenance/stocking equipment.
  13. Reach forward/down/up to 36 inches to place cases on floor/shelving.
  14. Handle labels/signs/tags.
  15. Handle case cutter/utility knife.
  16. Grasp and handle wet/cold/hot/crushable/metal/paper/plastic store products.
  17. Handle cardboard/packaging and debris.
  18. Manipulate maintenance equipment handles/grasps/knobs.
  19. Twist at the waist while cleaning, sorting, load/unloading, moving/removing merchandise, stocking merchandise and cleaning work area.
  20. Kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, bend at the waist/knees to count and physically touch merchandise
  21. Move fully loaded stocking carts, pallet jacks (up to 1000 lbs.) and maintenance equipment approximately 75 yards.
  22. Climb on ladders, cases, shelving and stairs up to 15 feet in height.
  23. Balance on cases of product and overhead rack.
  24. Pick up cardboard, packaging and debris from floor.
  25. Perform maintenance and sanitation functions.
  26. See cases, vendors, case strips, invoices, computerized receiving displays, product size/description, labels on products, stocking carts, debris on floor, and signs.
  27. Perceive color difference on product labels.
  28. Recognize cleaning/maintenance equipment, pallet jacks, fork lifts, computerized receiving displays and baler controls.
  29. Respond to intercom.
  30. Respond to co-workers questions.
  31. Respond to vendor/driver questions/comments.
  32. Respond to the sound of baler/pallet jack/fork lift/cleaning equipment operation.
  33. Communicate with vendors/drivers.
  34. Use the intercom system.
  35. Communicate with co-workers.
  36. Read case labels/strips, signs, tags, shelf signs, numbers and aisle markers.
  37. Read equipment and chemical warning labels.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Inside and outside work with extreme variations in heat/cold/ dust/humidity.
