Under the supervision of the Chief Commercial Officer, the Director of Economic & Business Development is responsible for leading the pursuit and delivery of revenue-generating projects as well as the implementation of state-wide initiatives fostering economic development. This role focuses on project management while supporting interdisciplinary teams, clients, and NCRR consultants. This position aims to identify business opportunities and lead cross-functional teams to foster profitable growth and establish strategic advantages for NCRR. This role is responsible for leading NCRR's efforts in various initiatives to support revenue generation, drive increased job creation, and promote economic growth.

Requirements

  • Oversee all functions and activities of the Economic & Business Development Department.
  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Onboard newly recruited employees.
  • Collaborates with our internal Engineering and Commercial team, which includes Real Estate, Communications, and GIS, to leverage expertise and support economic development projects throughout North Carolina.
  • Provide training and guidance to department staff through regular meetings and individual reviews.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Team to prioritize departmental goals and budget.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Commercial Development and Vice President of Engineering, cultivate relationships with state leaders, municipalities, academic institutions, and various industry professionals and ensure consistent communication on new initiatives and progress.
  • Attend and sponsor events to promote NCRR's economic initiatives and emphasize the value of NC's rail assets.
  • Deliver presentations on NCRR's economic and business initiatives and projects.
  • Supervise NCRR economic development programs, including their internal policies and procedures.
  • Track and manage economic development projects and leads across the state, collaborating with local and regional professionals.
  • Monitor, measure, and report on project engagements to the Chief Commercial Officer and Board of Directors.
  • Develop, execute, and oversee a business strategy prioritizing growth, positive customer service, and ease of doing business.
  • Promote NCRR's products or services to prospective clients and customers.
  • Participate in collaborative business meetings to update key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to identify inbound and outbound product shipments within NCRR-controlled territory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • A Bachelor's degree in public administration, business, or a transportation-related field is required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in economic or industrial development, government relations, transportation, or related field
  • Experience managing direct reports.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Between 20-25%
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • This work is predominantly conducted in an office setting.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
