Job Summary and Qualifications

The Division Vice President of Nursing Operations establishes systems and processes for measuring, improving and reporting on operational performance. In addition, the Director oversees agency usage and flexible staffing options within all St. Davids Healthcare facilities. This role provides consultation and education to the Division CNO Council. This position provides leadership for administering and planning centralized nursing scheduling and nursing market float pool system wide.

As a function of the Market Float Pool, the Vice President will oversee nursing staffing ratios, productivity targets and benchmarking for the system as well as provide education and training as directed by the Chief Nurse Executive. Ensures efficient and effective deployment of nursing initiatives and processes and acts as key interface for cross-functional initiatives and responsibilities (e.g., staffing and scheduling, recruiting, etc.) This position will also be responsible for other operational projects as appropriate as well as facilitating and supporting the System Professional Practice Council.

  • Directs all Central Nursing Scheduling functions system wide
  • Directs and oversees float resources across the system
  • Oversees nursing agency usage system-wide
  • Evaluates ongoing productivity targets and benchmarks
  • Recommends staffing adjustments as necessary
  • Monitors staffing/scheduling practices and patterns and reports findings to Nurse Executive team
  • Responsible for the hiring, orientation, education and evaluation of market float pool staff
  • Responsible for creating enhancement in operations and directing projects
  • Supports market wide processes to support professional nurse practice and professionalism.
  • Coordinates with the management engineer to develop and oversee the nurse staffing, scheduling and workload systems for the Market.
  • Prioritizes potential initiatives to ensure maximum benefit and utilization of financial and personnel resources.

Establishes systems for capturing, tracking, reporting relevant operational statistics such as:

  • Traveler/agency/usage/expense
  • Sitter usage/expense
  • Overtime/over percent usage/expense

  • Assists in adoption of electronic tools such as the nursing scorecard in collaboration with nursing leadership across the market.
  • Maintains nursing demographic database in collaboration with market Informatics Team.
  • Develops educational programs to orient nursing directors to budget process, staffing and benchmarking
  • Identifies resource requirements and cost projections when new programs/services are being planned.
  • Assists in the development of budgets for new nursing programs/services and assures they are reviewed, approved, recorded and initiated.
  • Coordinates projects and regularly interacts with Management Engineer related to staffing, scheduling and Market Float Pool Management.
  • Collaborates with St. Davids Healthcare System CFO related to special projects/requests.
  • Develop a division framework and strategy to prioritize, delegate, and execute initiatives that align with the enterprise strategy for nursing operations
  • Provide feedback to corporate and division on cross-functional initiative progress (e.g., recruiting, staffing and scheduling, etc.)
  • Provide feedback to corporate on nursing initiatives, standards of care, and clinical processes based on key performance metrics (e.g., turnover, contract labor, etc.)
  • Manage execution of nursing initiatives and strategies across the division
  • Assist in the development of clinical protocols that use evidence based best practices to provide consistency and drive performance outcomes.
  • Evaluate projects or initiative strategic fit with the organizations objectives to guide the allocation of human, financial, and technological resources.
  • Build strategic alliances and partnerships within the organization to collaboratively execute business strategies
  • Interface with cross-functional division leadership to oversee initiatives impacting nursing (e.g., float pools, recruiting strategies, etc.) aligned with HCA corporate strategies and division goals
  • Engage regularly with facility leadership and staff to identify unique operational needs and assist with development of action plans
  • Collaborate with Nursing Analytics contact(s) to track impact of initiatives across key nursing metrics (e.g., efficiency, quality, turnover, etc.)
  • Monitor and evaluate reports consistently, highlighting areas of change / focus and suggesting action plans
  • Interpret business data for the purpose of identifying patterns, trends, and variances in company operations
  • Working collaboratively with facility, division and corporate leadership to improve key nursing-driven metrics
  • Practicing and adhering to the Code of Conduct philosophy and Mission and Value Statement
  • Performing other duties as assigned
What qualifications you will need:
  • Healthcare Professional with a combined background in Hospital Operations and Financial Management as well as strong working knowledge of Information Systems is required.
  • Ability to translate complex financial operational and information systems issues to customers with varying levels of knowledge is required.
  • 5 years of clinical experience.
  • Must have strong knowledge of Microsoft System Office programs, including work, Excel, Power Point, Access or other database products desired.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Bachelors Degree- Nursing, Nursing Informatics, or Business Administration
  • If not required, education preferred: Masters Degree in Nursing, MHA, MBA
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in the state of Texas or Compact Nursing License. If your compact license is from a state besides Texas, you will be required to obtain a TX Nursing License within 90 days after your start date. Required Upon Hire (for certifications only: upon hire is defined as within 2 business days of start date)
