Position Summary:

Audubon's Wings internship program invites students and recent graduates to help shape a healthy environment and vibrant future for birds - and all of us who share the planet with them. The Conservation Education Intern will assist the Senior Coordinator of Education with many different aspects of Audubon's Center for Birds of Prey education program. This is a six-month part time position running from January through June. The Conservation Education Intern works under the guidance and direct supervision of the Senior Coordinator of Education, however, the entire staff is available to interns for special interest sessions, guidance, and assistance. The intern may also work with Center volunteers, the general public, school teachers, and Center guests. The intern will be leading programming that focuses on conservation, saving energy and protecting habitat for birds to participants of all ages. With spring and early summer being the busiest times for the Center's Education department, the intern will gain experience in organizing fundraisers, special educational events, and summer camp lessons.

The Education intern will have the opportunity to learn and gain valuable skills as it relates to operations of a nature center, developing content for programs, program delivery, marketing, and social media.

This position is part time on-site at Audubon. Center for Birds of Prey, Maitland, FL.

Compensation:

$15.00 / hour

Intern Responsibilities and Learning Objectives
  • Assist with the teaching of environmental education programs to school groups both on and offsite.
  • Act as lead counselor for our spring break and summer camp programs.
  • Help with the planning, set-up, and implementation of any special events or fundraisers taking place during this time period, including the Center's annual Baby Owl Shower event and Rainbow Raptors pride event.
  • Assist with the creation, implementation and surveying of educational programming, including Raptor Camp.
  • Help with marketing programs to schools and other target audiences.
  • Aid in making the Center more accessible and inclusive.
  • Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and training of education volunteers
  • Assist with social media marketing through use of the Center's Facebook and Instagram.
Internship Benefits
  • Learn aspects of running an Audubon Center, including answering requests for information from the public, guest relations, and participating with many other facets of the Center's day to day operations.
  • Share your experiences with others through e-newsletters, social media, etc.
Intern Schedule

The internship is being offered 20 hrs/week for six months.

Projected Start Date

Our 2025 internship is a paid internship opportunity expected to begin on January 4, 2025, and end on June 30, 2025. No housing is provided. Please submit a cover letter with a resume.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Completion of at least two years of college coursework in environmental or life sciences, or science education.
  • Some teaching experience to both children and adults.
  • Writing experience preferred.
  • Confident in leading a group and initiating activities, working independently, and team teaching.
  • Comfortable with public speaking to small or large groups.
  • Comfortable taking initiative in controlling and supervising groups of children during high-energy activities.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated, flexibility, a desire to learn, and the ability to work well with others.
  • A current driver's license or state issued ID, and reliable transportation to and from the Center.
  • Positive attitude and commitment to conservation.
