Overview
Do you love libraries and helping people, but find yourself more drawn to the business side of things? And are you looking to apply your natural math and Excel skills to a part-time job that's interesting and reliable? The New York Public Library has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. As part of the Library's mission, the Office of Budget and Planning prepares and oversees the development and management of the Library's budgets, maintains multi-year financial plans, assists managers throughout the Library by providing analyses of the budgets for their units, and works with Development in the preparation of private and government funding proposals.
This Budget Associate position will give you excellent exposure to the Budget Office, and provide insight into what has to happen to have a smoothly functioning financial operation. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a strong work ethic, possess solid written, verbal, and Excel skills, and are available 15-20 hours per week, mostly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 10 am and 5 pm. The Associate position is on-site only; there is no possibility for remote work.
Responsibilities
Under the direction of a Budget Analyst, this Associate will:
- Help process budget amendments for all areas of the library, giving insight into a wide range of library needs and purchases;
- Learn how to understand reports and perform certain tasks in Workday, our financial management platform;
- Understand the budget-check system and why transactions might fail budget-check and be prevented from moving forward;
- Help prepare journal entries, to move actual expenses from one part of the budget to another; and
- Attend weekly Budget Staff meetings to understand the issues facing the team
Required Education & Certifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Basic computer and technology skills including Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, and Google Applications
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow detailed instructions in a fast-paced environment
- Rigorous attention to detail
- Ability to work with a team and take direction from multiple people
- Superb interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong problem-solving skills and basic curiosity
- Demonstrated reliability and professionalism
- Ability to interface well with Librarians, Curators, Specialists, and Administrative Assistants across the library as they request amendments or other information
