As a Junior Medical Underwriter, you will learn to analyze new business health insurance applications in order to assess risk of future claims for Our Company at an entry level position. You must be trainable, self-motivated, able to work independently, confident in making your own decisions, have the ability to analyze medical information, work well with other team members, communicate effectively orally and written.

This position is non-exempt/hourly full-time (40 hours/week) Monday - Friday. Employees are required to work normal business hours of 8am-6pm Thursdays and 8am-5pm M-W & Friday. Thursday's employees will be required to word 8am-6pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime or weekends.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assessing Medical Risk for the Company
  • Knowledge and/or ability to learn how to review/analyze Evidence of Insurability and determine appropriate course of action (e.g., request requirements, approve, rate, decline)
  • Knowledge and/or ability to learn how to review/analyze medical history of relevant populations (e.g., medical applications, claims history) to correctly and completely identify medical risk or potential increased risk of morbidity or mortality
  • Knowledge and/or ability to learn our underwriting guidelines, medical terminology, prescription name/usage, as well as our in-house and vendor systems
  • Apply appropriate medical underwriting criteria to determine insurability, based upon in-house underwriting guidelines
  • Communicate decisions/outcomes to applicable audiences (e.g., employer, applicant, agent, internal business partner)
  • Responding to internal and external queries regarding application submissions
  • Completing additional tasks and special projects as needed
  • Complete an average of 80 files per day

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED (of higher) and 1+ years experience working within the healthcare insurance industry and performing daily work using health insurance industry software
  • Knowledge and/or ability to learn our underwriting guidelines, medical terminology, prescription name/usage, as well as our in-house and vendor systems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word (updating/editing workbooks), Outlook (receiving/sending emails) and TEAMs
  • Proven ability to work full-time 8am-6pm Thursdays, 8am-5pm M-W & Friday
  • Reside within Central Time Zone
  • Have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provide information privacy
  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure
  • Live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years experience in a health insurance underwriting role
  • Experience working in health insurance industry
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Able to remain seated and use a computer for 8-9 hours per day
  • Ability to commit extensive material and details to memory
  • Organized and meet daily production requirements in fast-paced and changing environment

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
