Overview:

In collaboration with the Infection Control Practitioner and Director of Quality Management, is responsible for supporting hospital-wide infection prevention efforts, performance improvement projects and hospital-wide compliance with regulatory agency regulations (JCAHO, DHS, etc.), care management initiatives, policies and procedures. In this role, the IC Coordinator will be assigned specific daily, weekly and or Monthly tasks to be completed by deadlines at the ICP discretion. This may include, but not limited to Making phone calls to various clinical units to inquire about isolation patients on a daily basis and recording the information in tables as required, daily reporting data to CDPH, LADPH and or National regulatory agencies like NHSN on a monthly or as needed basis. Occasional rounding on Nursing units making direct observations and recording the data as appropriate, limited staff education on certain occasions and or supporting ICP in providing education and class or meeting organization materials as needed. The IC Coordinator is expected to show a great deal of motivation and high energy in a fast paced and quick learning environment, the IC coordinator will be expected to show evidence of learning new skills continuously as designated by the ICP to achieve new objectives in the learning curve. Punctuality and commitment to the hospital patient safety program goals are essential in this role.

Other functions include the use of a variety of databases, word processing, spreadsheet development/input, graph production and PowerPoint presentations.

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of SGVMC. It is expected that the employee demonstrate behaviors consistent with the Core Values of AHMC. The employee shall support SGVMCs strategic plan and the goals and direction of the performance Improvement Plan (PIP).

Responsibilities:

Participates in orientation/review classes for hospital employees on the policies, standards and practices of Infection Control relative to their scope of responsibilities.

Participates in design and conducting educational programs for Nursing Staff and other hospital staff and physicians.

Participates as working member of the Infection Control Committee, by providing data abstraction and analysis to support evaluation of policies and procedures that have been developed and implemented by the IC Committee.

Participates in conjunction with Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) as consultant/educator within the hospital to develop policies, procedures and guidelines which promote optimal health and safety of patients and employees.

Collaborates, in conjunction with ICP, with Nursing and Medical Staff in assessing known or suspected infection in patients, and implementing appropriate control measures to insure that care is not compromised for patients requiring isolation.

Participates, in conjunction with ICP, in establishing and evaluating policies for the Employee Health Department with regard to infection prevention and control, assists EHD Staff in investigations of patient-to-employee and employee-to-patient cross-infections.

Participates with ICP in making recommendations to hospital employees in ancillary departments regarding isolation procedures, environmental cleaning, handling of infectious waste, disinfection, sterilization and in the selection of equipment.

Participate in conjunction with ICP to act in consultative capacity to other health care agencies or providers by assisting in investigation of suspect problem, staff development/education, etc. Includes appropriate regulatory follow-up reporting.

Reviews and disseminates, in collaboration with ICP, new information on infection control measures to appropriate individuals or departments within the hospital.

Participates in on-going surveillance of known or suspected infections in patient or employees. Included in role is the ability to educate staff, physicians, patient and families in proper IC practices.

Acts in conjunction with ICP for detection of outbreaks or other special problems; provides recommendations of activities to control/prevent infection in patients and employees.

Participates in the evaluation effectiveness of adherence to Infection Control Policies to identify practices, equipment, supplies and/or new products which constitute a risk or breakdown in infection control measures.

Analyzes data collected to institute appropriate remedial measures. Utilizes reporting mechanisms to inform and motivate hospital employees and provides data to the Infection Control Committee and appropriate others.

Assists members of the Medical Staff in reporting reportable communicable disease to local, county, state and federal health authorities as appropriate.

Makes environmental rounds throughout hospital and clinics for the purpose of alerting the professional and nursing staffs to possible infections, as well as monitoring compliance with Infection Control Procedures.

Conducts studies relevant to Infection Control Programs to assist the Infection Control Committee in policy development and evaluation.

Disseminates and interprets infection surveillance data to various committees.

Assists Infection Control Committee in planning corrective actions and establishing future goals and objectives.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • College graduate with a minimum of a Bachelor degree; health care experience preferred
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred, Public health work preferred
  • Previous clerical, data base management or unit secretary experience preferred
  • Detail oriented
  • High level of initiative
  • Moderate to advanced Microsoft Office skills including use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a strong service orientation
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish/Vietnamese/Chinese) preferred
