The Opportunity:

We are actively recruiting a Senior Manager/Principal* to join our Rochester office.

Serve as a tax functional leader across compliance, advisory or annuity tax service delivery for clients, with a deep technical focus on trusts and estates accounting and tax law issues. Lead tax processes by directing and coordinating day-to-day interactions with the team, reviewing work product, driving delivery of services to meet deadlines for client deliverables, developing internal team members, and managing the functional efforts of such tax processes.

Independently recognize and identify problem areas and items that need to be addressed or escalated to ensure tax returns, tax research, tax accounting and tax projects are timely and accurately completed. Serve as a trusted advisor and role model across multiple teams, research tax law issues, provide advice and assistance managing risks and across tax compliance and/or advisory services. Serve as deep technical advisor on firm trust and estate tax type matters including compliance, reporting, and transactions.

A Closer Look At The Role:

Ability to prepare and review fiduciary income tax returns, gift tax returns, federal and state estate tax returns, and private foundation returns Prepare and review estate and trust fiduciary accountings Prepare and review related filings, planning and analysis for all fiduciary accountings and returns Ability to review fiduciary accountings and coordinate with fiduciaries, attorneys, and Surrogate’s Court accounting personnel Compute and review commissions and calculate unitrust and annuity payments Maintenance of accounts and records for various estates and trusts General trust and estate administration, including record keeping, monitoring filing deadlines, and client communication Oversee the accounting aspects of a trust or estate intermediate or final settlement. Gather relevant accounting materials for the outside preparation of judicial and non-judicial accountings, including full, principal only or abbreviated accountings Interpret the governing trust instrument and conduct review of accountings to confirm trust was funded correctly and that all items were allocated correctly between income and principal during the life of the trust Review and/or prepare computations of trustee’s commissions in terminating trusts Participate in quality control reviews of accountings being filed with a court or governmental agency Prepare annual guardianship accounting reports Train and educate staff members and colleagues on various estate and trust topics Counsel and advise clients on estate planning matters and work in conjunction with clients and other trusted professionals to develop comprehensive estate plans

Skills and Attributes for Success:

Working independently with direct supervisory responsibilities Specialized depth and/or breath of expertise in trust and estate taxation Ability to provide leadership (advising and providing) direction to others in financial areas of specialization and lead coordination of daily work activities and review the most complex work of other teammates Regularly lead multiple projects Works independently Candidate has the authority to make significant choices and decisions, without specific guidance or direction from leadership

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Tax, Law, or Economics CPA, EA, licensed paralegal, or licensed attorney Minimum of 10 years of work experience in professional services or professional tax organization Ability to prioritize, handle and track multiple assignments Demonstrated ability to resolve complex tax issues across multiple functions Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to identify improvement opportunities and actively engage in implementing improvements Demonstrated leadership skills and proven skills in developing employees Strong oral and written communication as well as presentation skills Experience with financial and tax applications such as CCH Suite of Tax Products preferred Proficient using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, and Power Point
