NAKASEC seeks a Chicago-based Senior Finance Manager to work closely with our Finance and Compliance Director to ensure that NAKASEC, NAKASEC Action Fund, and Asian Americans for Change Funds finances are regularly managed and adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.

As a seasoned Senior Finance Manager, you will oversee day-to-day financial operations with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring adherence to board-approved budgets, forecasting opportunities and challenges, and maintaining robust cash flow management. Your expertise will be pivotal in facilitating timely financial reporting in collaboration with our accounting firm while guaranteeing accuracy in bill payments, payroll processing, and tax obligations across multiple jurisdictions. Your responsibilities will include coordinating financial communications with key stakeholders, including Co-Directors, fiscal sponsors, and board members, and preparing and presenting financial reports to our Board of Directors. Moreover, you will play a central role in managing fiscal sponsorships, executing subgrants, and staying abreast of evolving tax laws and regulations to ensure compliance and mitigate risk. Your role will also nurture the growth and development of finance and compliance contractors engaged by NAKASEC, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability within the team.

To flourish as our Sr. Finance Manager, you should have:

  • Proficiency in English
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required; an advanced degree, such as an MBA, MFin, or CPA designation, is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting or finance experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector or similar environment, with expertise in nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, and grant management.
  • Strong analytical skills for evaluating financial data, interpreting trends, and providing insights to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Ability to manage and work effectively with the finance team and reprioritize and pivot to meet deadlines set by NAKASEC, funders, and government.
  • Experience in budget development, monitoring, forecasting, financial strategic planning, and long-term financial modeling is vital.
  • Passionate about dismantling racism, sexism, queerphobia, transphobia, and other oppressive systems as part of our core mission.

Your responsibilities as the Sr. Finance Manager will include:

  • Ensuring adherence to board-approved budget, forecasting opportunities, issues, and challenges.
  • Managing cash flow, bill payments, payroll, and tax obligations across various states.
  • Supervising accurate recording, classification, and reporting of transactions.
  • Coordinating expense reporting, invoicing, and reimbursement for cost-sharing agreements.
  • Facilitating fiscal sponsorships and collaborating with financial partners for audits and tax preparations.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the board of directors and executive directors, attending board meetings and collaborating with board treasurers.
  • Produce and execute Memorandums of Understanding for subgrants and stay updated with tax laws and regulations, communicating changes internally.
  • Develop, implement, and update strong internal controls, ensuring compliance and integrity.
  • Prepare finance reports for funders, attend relevant meetings, and support NAKASEC Co-Directors with projects.
  • Demonstrate commitment to social, racial, and economic justice, actively working towards eradicating systemic oppression.

NAKASEC was founded by local Korean community-based organizations from across the United States. These organizations needed a robust and progressive voice that could impact federal policy and build a national movement. NAKASEC remains strongly connected with and informed by the local groups that originally formed us. Our affiliates serve as our channel to learn more about the issues impacting our community members at the grassroots level. This local-to-national channel directly informs NAKASECs national campaigns, policy agenda, and other projects.

NAKASECs affiliates are HANA Center (Illinois), Woori Center (Pennsylvania), MinKwon Center for Community Action (New York), Hamkae Center (Virginia), and Woori Juntos (Texas).
