About the Research and Regulatory Affairs Team

The Physicians Committee's Research and Regulatory Affairs team is composed of experts in human-focused research, education, and testing methods. We collaborate with government and academic scientists to promote and develop those methods in order to improve human health and replace the use of animals. We engage with grassroots advocates, legislators, and the media to achieve this.

About This Career Opportunity

The Medical Research Specialist will carry out policy, scientific, and outreach activities related to the reduction and replacement of animals in biomedical research.

Essential functions and specific duties will include:

  • Determine, advocate for, and implement policy changes to prioritize funding for nonanimal and clinical research over animal-based studies at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other funding bodies.
  • Assist in executing strategies to address animal methods bias and other barriers to broader uptake of nonanimal methods, including by conducting primary research and authoring peer-reviewed articles.
  • Lead advocacy efforts including crafting policy positions, public comments, and Congressional lobbying activities.
  • Draft accessible publications and manage media content to promote the advantages of human-based research.
  • Organize, attend, and present at educational events, workshops, and conferences to engage and train researchers in nonanimal research techniques.
  • Foster collaborations with federal agencies, scientific organizations, and advocacy groups to promote human-based research.
  • Represent the Physicians Committee as a spokesperson across various platforms, including to the NIH, the press, and the public.
This is a full-time position that may be performed remotely from any location in the United States. The Physicians Committee is headquartered in Washington, D.C. Travel on a quarterly basis is required for PCRM, NIH and Congressional meetings, conferences, etc.

The position level for this role is Specialist. Specialist salaries start at $70,000 and have a median of $79,457. A salary offer will take into consideration education, experience, and skills along with internal and external reference points.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a professional with a doctoral degree in biomedical science or a related field and a minimum of five years of primary biomedical research experience in an academic or industry laboratory to promote alternatives to the use of animals in biomedical research. The ideal candidate will also:
  • Be passionate about alternatives to the use of animals in research, education, and testing.
  • Have a thorough understanding of concepts in clinical and biomedical research including human subjects, in vivo, in vitro, and in silico methods and familiarity with or interest in the laws, regulations, and practices related to biomedical research.
  • Have an interest in science policy and research policy and familiarity with the basic functions of the NIH and Congress.
  • Be an excellent oral and written communicator.
  • Be willing to travel, present, and network to further our message and facilitate progress.
