Smith provides a unique educational experience to any student who wants to make high school an important investment toward career or college success. At Smith we provide students the opportunity to explore 15 different career areas, and to select a career or college direction that is fitted to his or her individual interests, talents and abilities. Also, at Smith we provide a learning environment that acknowledges that different students learn in different ways - academic concepts are taught and reinforced in shops and laboratories utilizing applied learning and project-based learning. For juniors and seniors, agreements with employers provide internships and cooperative work opportunities that directly relate to each student's schoolwork. Agreements with local colleges provide students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Smith prides itself as a small school of excellence where each student works with a small cohort of students and teachers building a community of learners. Smith is a results-oriented school. About the Role:The Agricultural Mechanics Teacher will help lead students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, psychological growth and maturation. They will teach entry-level skills in the trade area in alignment with Chapter 74 Vocational State Frameworks to support a smooth transition to possible higher education and employment in mid level technical careers. The Agricultural Mechanics Instructor will spend approximately seventy-five percent of their time teaching hands-on practical applications in a shop setting and twenty-five percent teaching theory in the classroom. Skills, Experience and Training:Must be able to teach a variety of agricultural mechanics subject areas from among the following: single and multiple cylinder engines, hydraulic systems, basic electrical, HVAC, plumbing and woodworking, electric arc and oxyacetylene gas welding, drafting, the repair and maintenance of agricultural facilities, and the operation, repair and maintenance of agricultural machinery and equipment, including tractors, power equipment, and small engines.Experience working on a farm or farm environment is preferred.Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a caring, positive and constructive manner and specifically with students, teachers, school administrators, parents, and volunteers. Must have and maintain moral standards.Must maintain professional appearance appropriate to career and technical area.Dependability in attendance and productivity. Perform high-quality work consistently.Exhibit a positive work ethic.Be a role model for students and the general public at large. Demonstrates confidentiality in personnel and student matters.Demonstrate proficiency in handling problems as they arise and know when and to whom to assign the handling of situations in the absence of an administrator.Ability to work independently as well as in a team with other staff members. Certification/License Required:Chapter 74 License/Licensable in Agricultural Mechanics; or candidates Licensed in Chapter 74 Diesel Mechanics with Ag Mechanics related work history will be considered.Minimum of 5 years experience in a related field.Preferred certification beyond what is required for licensure includes, but is not limited to ASE (diesel), OPE, Construction Supervisor, 40 hours OSHA Trainer, or other applicable industry certifications. Must possess a valid driver's license. Benefits:The teacher workday is 7:30 am to 2:40 pm, for 183 days from approximately late August through mid June each year.
