DIRECTOR OF NURSING

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Lead, manage, and hold the nursing staff accountable.
  • Manage staff budgets for both locations.
  • Oversee the nurses' schedules and the training of technicians, assistants, and the kennel staff.
  • Ensure all managers appropriately communicate protocol and hold their staff accountable to follow systems.
  • This position should also ensure that managers are open to input from staff on protocol adjustment and during protocol creation.
  • Work closely with the Director of Non-Medical Operations to ensure hospital protocols make sense, ensure efficient flow, incorporate team members' input, and are easily accessible to all staff.
  • Lead by example with constant diligence to follow protocol.
  • Maintain knowledge of current hospital protocols and procedures.
  • Direct staff and doctors to written protocols when looked to for guidance.
NURSING MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Nursing should genuinely care about the professional fulfillment of the departmental nurse managers and nurse teams who work for CTVSEH. He or she will work to give the management staff clear expectations, guide them on leading their team, and communicate their concerns to the CTVSEH Senior Leadership Team. This also includes working actively with recruitment on candidate selection to maximize CTVSEH services.
  • Nurse Schedules
    • Work with the nurse leadership team to create staff schedules that enable CTVSEH to practice "Powerful Medicine, Exceptional Care" while allowing staff members to have a sustainable schedule that minimizes burnout and encourages self-care.
  • Nurse Training
    • Work directly with the Director of Training, the nurse training team, departmental managers, and floor leads to ensure that training is in place and each staff member is challenged and engaged. Ensure the training pace fits both the employees' and the hospital's/departments' needs. Training should include attention to technical skills, medical knowledge, triage prioritization understanding, leadership skills, and emotional intelligence.
STAFF BUDGET

The Director of Nursing will work closely with the Director of Client Experience and department managers to maximize efficiency while providing a healthy work environment for all staff.

MEETING PULSE

All CTVSEH employees are required to attend traction meetings as part of their continuing employment with CTVSEH. The Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) is a tool that CTVSEH uses to help organize "all of its human energy." The system provides a structure for organizations to meet, problem-solve, communicate, and manage.

SCHEDULE
  • This position is expected to be scheduled for an average of 40 hours/ week.
  • The Director of Nursing should be present in the hospitals at least four days a week to ensure a consistent presence for the staff and a "boots on the ground" perspective of day-to-day operations.
  • This individual should apply discipline to structure their time to accomplish the position, have an appropriate relationship (lead and manage while allowing them to fly) with their direct reports, and have a sustainable work-life balance.
  • The Director of Nursing is fundamentally responsible for leadership in veterinary hospitals open 24/7, 365 days a year. This means that in some circumstances, the director of nursing needs to be available to weigh in and/or direct management of situations as they arise relative to the continued functioning of the hospital. This person is responsible for directing his or her management team and staff regarding how/when he or she is available and responding to situations appropriately and calmly.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Company Goals: Help create and be aware of yearly, 3 year and 10 year CTVSEH company goals.
  • Client Complaints: Direct the initial response to client/ RDVM concerns/ complaints as they occur to ensure they are appropriately addressed and to minimize the number that proceed to formal complaints.
  • Work diligently with management to fully understand and direct their teams to make steady progress toward the company goals.
  • Work with direct reports to set goals that achieve both individual professional aspirations and the company vision. This will ensure that every individual is moving toward the goal of a high standard of care while allowing individual fulfillment and hospital advancement.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Natural exhibition of CTVSEH Core Values.
  • Experience in floor leadership and/or departmental management is ideal.
  • A self-motivated, positive, and disciplined person with high emotional intelligence and excellent communication skills.
  • At least three years in a veterinary technician role in an emergency and/or specialty hospital.
