The Impact You'll Make in this RoleAs Director of Development, you are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Development department and directly manage the annual fund campaign, a major gifts portfolio, and corporate and foundation relations. You will also manage the Prospect and Gift Manager and contracted grant writer.

As a Director of Development, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas, i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Manages all strategies and activities for donor cultivation, solicitation, and relations
  • Manages Grants program to include proposals for foundations, corporations, and government grants.
  • Research and contacts new or potential corporate, foundation, government and individual donors
  • Cultivates relationships with private and public funders to create meaningful connections between them and the Zoo's vision, mission, and programs.
  • Supervises development staff and independent contractors.
  • Prepares and manages annual department budget including monthly reporting.
  • Assumes responsibility for development reports to the Board and other agencies.
  • Creates office systems to support all Development projects and operations.
  • Manages donor, gift record-keeping and grant reporting.
  • Manages the pledge reminder and acknowledgement programs.
  • Manages Annual Fund Campaign
  • Attends community events related to donor cultivation.
  • Participates in outreach activities and performances outside regular business hours.
  • Is available to assist in any other capacity as assigned.
  • Works with the Executive Director, Vice President of Development, Board, Development Committee, and Major Gifts Committee to implement fundraising strategies.
  • Supports and assists the Development Committee in partnership with the Vice President of Development.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Your Skills and ExpertiseTo set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • CFRE preferred.
  • Five (5) years of demonstrated successful fundraising experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience.
  • Must adhere to the highest ethical standards, demonstrate an empathetic disposition and perseverance, and convey sensitivity to the needs of donors.
  • Excellent attention to details and follow-through as demonstrated through effective project management experience.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills.
  • Outstanding ability to work effectively in teams of diverse people and organizations.
  • Experience working with a donor database, as well as with Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong organizational, communications, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed.
  • Ability to accommodate occasional long days or overnight travel.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and after hour assignments.
