Job Description

The Highlights:

The Education Support Specialist in the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) will be employed as a part-time learning specialist to work a minimum of 14-20 hours per week. This position will work one-to-one with DePaul students who have disabilities such as: LD, AD/HD, Chronic Illness, Mental Health Disorders, Physical and Sensory Impairment, Autism Spectrum and Bi-Polar Disorders, etc. CSD clinicians work with undergraduate and graduate student in all the Schools/Colleges throughout the University. CSD is one unified department with offices located on the Lincoln Park and downtown Loop campuses. This position will be located on the Lincoln Park campus office Monday through Friday with possible evening hours depending on student schedules.

What You'll Do:
  • Conduct weekly one-on-one sessions with identified roster of students to support academic success including, but not limited to: assessment of student learning profile, creation of customized remediation plan, monitoring student progress, and advising of course selection for next term. Sessions may be once or twice each week or at need for the general CSD student population.
  • Advocate with and for students, as appropriate, in collaboration with faculty, staff, therapists, parents and other key individuals in students' lives. Understand CSD confidentiality policies and optional self-disclosure of students CSD enrollment.
  • Complete and maintain necessary forms, reports and an ongoing record of the weekly sessions with each student; inform the CSD Advisor or Director of concerns relating to the progress, or lack thereof, for individual students.
  • Collaborate with staff sharing key knowledge and best practices as well as accepting same from staff to increase one's own knowledge-base.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings contributing to discussions and any follow-up assignments related to department needs
What You'll Need:
  • Master's degree in Special Education, Disability Education/Rehabilitation, Disability Counseling, Learning Disabilities or related fields
  • Knowledge of diagnostic testing instruments (e.g., WAIS IV, Woodcock Johnson II/III, WIAT, RTI), interpretation of results and associated accommodations
    4-6 years experience providing instructional and advocacy support for students and/or adults with disabilities
  • Knowledge of relevant laws governing students with disabilities (ADA, FERPA, IDEA) and guidelines for accommodations
  • Knowledge of computer technologies and software programs; Outlook, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills
  • Team player and collaborator within the department and across the University
  • Flexibility and diplomacy in handling unforeseen situations
  • Ability to develop a positive working rapport with students
  • This position will be located at the Loop campus office MondayFriday with possible evening hours depending on student schedules. Possible relocation to Lincoln Park office based on student and department needs.
